Yes it's very good for the team. It's better than overpaying (years/price) for a 35 year old guy, which allows JT to become captain and take over the team. |

As a Oiler fan, we were talking a lot about Mark Streit as a UFA target, but that new contract is just nuts for a 35 year old player at the tail end of his career. I think your GM made a very smart choice here, and at least got something back.
I now have to nominate Holmgren as the worse GM in the league. Nothing but one stupid big money contract after another, and now he will have to use both salary buyouts (more than likely) just to get under the cap space.
Good luck next season guys |

1st - Captain by default not in reality.
2nd - This contract is ridiculous. Honestly, I don't believe he's worth more that 4mil/season at this term considering his age.
3rd - Dee finally made good points. Snow wasn't around for a lot of the horrific moves. The main problem the isles have is attracting UFAs. A lot of GMs would panic and overpay to keep guys in said situation. Because Snow hasn't, the isles are in a good position moving forward. |

It's not good it's great. The guy was captain because there was no other choice at the time. |

As a GM, you have to negotiate with your players as due diligence, some fans wanted Streit back at a reasonable price, not over-payment.....
All Islander fans knew he is not worth more than Viz's contract, which is fair to say. |

Maybe I'm misreading the above article but does it not say Garth Snow was GM when DP was signed to his donkey contract?? - PetrPuck
Good point. That is a strike against Snow AND DEE. DP was extended in September 06. Snow was hired in July 06. |

I thought it was a mistake to even offer 3 years. I wanted him gone and at most given one year. |

actually what Ek said yesterday was very smart and a very good blog (..... ....)
The kings have just south of $12mill in cap space with 9 forwards and 4 defensemen and one goalie.
Voynov is going to get a hefty raise, I'm guessing roughly 3-3.5 mill
so that leaves roughly $9 mill for 3 forwards, 2 defensemen, 1 goalie, and 3 extras
9 spots roughly $9 mill
Voynov or Bernier is in position to get offersheeted unless Bernier is traded before July 5th.
$3,364,391 a season would cost a 2nd. Only problem is, we would have to trade Anaheim for our second back... |

that and what he turned down from Snow (3 years, 4.75/year) was way more than most of us feel he was worth.

Funny you mentioned BOB, bc I thought he was a good young goalie in Phila, he had that very strong start to the season, but wasn't ready for the rigors of an NHL season and tired out. Then they soured on him, and he lost his confidence.... |
