The only thing that concerns me, from your team's standpoint, is the length of the deal.
His first year or two there he will be very good but his health history and age start to become a little bit of a factor in year three.

Agreed. I guess the Flyers could potentially trade him back to Tampa at some later point to let him finish his career there. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: More Lecavalier, Next Steps - bmeltzer
I do like the deal from pretty much every standpoint, except the length. Like the Streit deal it feels like it's one year too long.
Still the work done if free agency, Lecavalier & Streit, has allowed Holmgren to hang onto Schenn, Couturier, Simmonds and other quality youngsters while improving the team. |

You like the Streit move? I thought that acquisition was dicey, to say the least. At this point, he is just a glorified power play point man and little else. Flyers power play was deadly last year, I thought the Streit move was a little unnecessary. |

The Streit move was non-sense. It got even worse now that they have signed Lecavalier (with a NMC). I find it really hard to keep all of their assets going forward. Couturier or Schenn alongside Read will probably be casualties. Giroux's new contract will cost at least $8.25M/year.
Who's playing G backup? Who's getting traded so you can fit in another contract for that?

His term length is scary, but Hartnell's term & cap hit is equally as scary when you consider production vs $$$
It can't hurt that Vinny has a ring to go along with his leadership as well, and he and Giroux can only compliment each other nicely. |

I'm OK with it. The other option was likely moving Schenn or Couturier elsewhere for a guy with a similar cap hit to Streit's.
It's definitely a move that has to be take in context. I just don't think they found a good enough trade for a guy like Keith Yandle, Kevin Shattenkirk or Alexander Edler. Streit provides a good puck mover for a few years as kids develop. |

I'm trying to find the clinical definition of a "good GM" to help out some of hte people that love to hate on the Flyers.
Is a good GM the guy that constantly stays way under the cap, has a good pool of young talent and his team either hits or misses year by year?
or
Is a good GM the guy that spends to the cap, constantly figures out new ways to work around the cap, goes out and gives his team a chance to make a run every year?
I don't think a GM can be measured as good or bad until he's done and you can look back at his record of cups vs no cups.
People like to jump all over Holmgren over some of his deals but I don't think they look objectively at the outcomes. I'm constantly amazed at the witty criticisms that the Flyers get as if they totally forgot there's a cap or that they haven't even thought about the idea that they Flyers might have projection numbers and know where and how they will fit who and when under the cap.
Amazing how many out of work GMs there are on Hockeybuzz.
Re: Vinny - I like it, may even love it by the end of this season. Beginning with the fact that we won't have to run Giroux out there for every D-zone faceoff and ending with a 60+ point second line center at a 4.5m cap hit, I like the move. |

No, he's better than that, he does have some 2 way ability, albeit more so on the offensive end, but he will help our transition game, which was sorely lacking. |

The knock on Streit is his defensive game. He's pretty old and can't skate fast enough to recover. He's a great puck mover though. A true PP QB. |

Astute assessment on your part, hopefully for your team he can be the bridge you portrayed him to be. |

The near $21mm in cap space next year, combined with a probable rise in salary cap will likely allow them to keep Giroux, Coururier and Schenn, if not Read.
If you read the blog, all the questions you asked are answered. You also forget the near $5mm in LTIR relief from Pronger. Considering your team just gave 4 years to a 34 year old that's never been a top line player without Crosby and made Letang the 3rd highest cap hit in the NHL among defensemen, you might want to consider moving out of that glass house before tossing any stones. |

Exactly. The Pens saw some of that unfortunately in the playoffs. Once somebody gets around him, he doesn't have the speed to get back. But, he is good on the PP, just he is not worth 4 years. |

Well what do you know, the Flyers have plenty of stay at home defensive defensemen, they need a guy that can move the puck well, which Streit can still do pretty well. |

I think his defensive game is average at best. Still has a lethal slapper and can move the puck well though. |

That's the hope. Hopefully they keep Coburn, who can be a solid, stay at home defenseman with good mobility and help protect Streit's weaknesses from being real liabilities. |

It's no worse than having Matt Carle back, (only as a better shooter), his minutes will be a huge asset as well.
When you consider our other options, obtaining he and Vinny, while losing no assets helps to assess other areas of need. |

I went through all of it in detail in the blog. Flyers are OK cap wise. Also, while Streit wasn't the ideal option, he fills a need for a puck mover - he's not a speedster but is a good passer in addition to his huge shot on power play - without having had to open other holes in lineup to get him. The latter part is why Flyers opted for him.

Not sure what the fuss is about really. I think his contract is a great deal for the flyers. Excluding last year, he's scored 20 goals or more in 12 straight seasons.
Ironically, while comparing the two players, I found that their birthdays are 3 days apart! |

I guess you didn't bother to actually READ the blog you are commenting on.
First off Pronger will go on LTIR and either Bourdon or Gervais will be waived or traded. That alone frees up over 5.5 million. Additionally a defenseman, most likely Mezaros, will be dealt during the summer which frees up another 4 million. In the meantime they can exceed the cap by over 6 million during the summer so signing a goalie really isn't a problem. |

I love when Pens fans come in here to ask about cap space. You have 8 players signed for next season who will cost a combined $48 million.
If you did just a little bit of research you'd see there will be plenty of money for Giroux, Couturier and B Schenn. Read is the guy who looks like the odd man out. |
