When I lived in Calgary between 1993 and 1996, yes. I always cheer for the home team. |

My buddy Richard lost six Gretzky rookie cards when his parents moved out of town. True story. He put them in a purple Crown Royal bag and never saw them again. That's $12,000 just walking out the door.
in very nice condition probably closer to 3K |

Richard Cloutier: The Gretzky Thing - Maxbone
Hindsight is 20/20, but the Oilers could have been A-Ok if they had used those assets adequately.
Ignoring the 15m in cash and Gelinas and Carson - who were what they were - here's what we did with first round picks in 1989, 1991 and 1993:
- trade the 89 pick for Corey Foster, a former 12th overall pick by New Jersey who became essentially a career AHLer.
- Draft Martin Rucinsky (20th). Trade him in his first season for Ron Tugntt and Brad Zavisha.
- Draft Nick Stadjuhar (16th)
Here's what we could have done:
- Draft Olaf Kolzig (taken one slot after the NJ pick) or Adam Foote (taken two slots later). This eliminates the need to trade Rucinsky for Tugnutt or draft Stajduhar as the case may be, and I lean towards drafting Foote.
- Draft Ray Whitney (who went 23rd) or Sandis Ozilinsch (who went 30th). Or, does a 20th and our 12th (we used it on Tyler Wright apparently) get the 6th overall pick that year (Petr Forseberg)? Let's just say we've got Whitney.
- Draft Koivu (who went 21st).
Here's what the 93 hindsight Oilers now look like post-dynasty:
Weight, Arnott as budding top 2 centres. Still have MacTavish and a young Todd Marchand, and Koivu in the pipeline.
Ray Whitney, Zdeno Ciger, Shayne Corson, Dean McAmmond , Kelly Buchberger, Kirk Maltby
Defense with Foote, Luke Richardson, Igor Kravchuk, Frederik Olausson and Bob Beers at 22, 24, 26, 26 and 26 respectively.
Let alone having drafted poorly during the dynasty years. All this to say that if the Oilers were a better team at drafting, it wouldn't have been a fair deal still, but it wouldn't have been disastrous as it was.
Interesting anecdote: Opting not to re-sign Bryan Pitton in 2011, the Oilers relinquished the final decedent asset from the Gretzky trade.
Finally, always thought it was a stroke of genius by Vachon and McNall to give non-consecutive 1sts to the Oilers. It allowed them to keep stocked while adding game-breaking talent. If you think that's a minor detail, ask Brian Burke whether he might have preferred giving up non-consecutives for Kessel. |

Could you imagine in today's NHL what would happen if Ovi or Crosby was traded only to see the main piece(carson) dealt a year later?
There would be deaths. |

I know it was a different era, and he was nothing compared to Gretzky, but I'm surprised at how good Jimmy Carson's numbers were... http://www.hockeydb.com/i...tats/pdisplay.php?pid=845 - laughs2907
Dude was simply a head-case. He was arguably the best player his age in the game though.
We probably don't get Robitaille if we asked for him instead, but maybe we would have been able to snag another one of their top prospects at the time, a guy named Rob Blake... |
