I realize that Jet's fans need something to cheer about, but seriously? Calder Trophy.....no chance. I really hope that he makes the team and has a great season, but let's not pretend that this is the next 'Phenom'. He's simply the random guy that the Jet's made their first ever draft pick (for the current Jets franchise). Any more then that is a JOKE. |

why is it a joke? just because the jets didn't have 1st round picks 10 years in a row and still suck doesn't mean this guy can't win the calder. in fact, because they didn't rush him and because the Jets actually have a good mix of vets and youth, they'll win way before the oil ever do. the jets are on the right path. the oil are on the path of the isles. too bad to because eberle and gagner are good canadian kids.
marc will have a very solid rookie campaign but you're right he's no yakupov skating around the ice to celebrate a tying goal. have fun losing again. |

Are you from the future? You seem to speak with a degree of certainty that is quite hilarious.
Anyway, nobody knows what will happen, but the Oilers appear to be on the right path...
I found this interesting...
From David Staples:
This just in from Kevin Allen of USA Today, a poll of players on which NHL team will become a powerhouse: “USA TODAY Sports surveyed 29 top NHL players and asked them to choose one team that will rise up to be a powerhouse in three seasons. The Oilers received 16 votes. No other team picked up more than five votes.” |

I mean..not to like..add fuel to the fire, but when a team picks 1st overall/top 5 as many years as the Oils did (Pens, Hawks, Capitals to an extent, recently), you're bound to turn into one of the upper tiered teams.

A joke? How so? No, I don't expect Scheifele to be as you put it a phenom but why is the Calder trophy such a stretch? The Calder is often won by players a couple of years removed from their draft year (though not always) and looking at his competition this year I don't think anyone is leaps and bounds ahead of him as far as rookies go. And there was no randomness involved in making that pick, they picked the guy they knew was right for them. The Jets haven't had as many first overall picks to work with as the Oilers have they've had to do what they can with later picks and considering that they've done pretty well. I don't see any reason he can't challenge for the Calder trophy. |

I don't mind at all the suggestion that he could compete for and potentially win the Calder.
Comparisons to Landeskog because of junior stats though, must have been pulled from a hat. seriously. |

I took a look at past Calder winners, particularly recent ones and had a look at how the junior stats progressed. It's a possible indicator not a definitive one. Just as much as Scheifele could mimc a Landeskog step to the NHL he could also be Robbie Schremp which I said as well.
If you look at OHL scoring leaders there are just as many "who???" at the top as guys in the NHL over the years.
My point is there are reasons why fans in Winnipeg are talking about Sheifele and the Calder, rightly or wrongly. |

I have seen this kid play for Barrie and he can absolutly take over games he has the size and weight that alot of the other rookies don't to stay healthy and be in the line up on a regular basis. I could see him in the running for it but the guy that worries me who might run away with it is Drouin if he is playing with Stammer and St.louis all year he will get at least 50-60 points (if he stays on a line with them) |

I think that if Scheifele does develop some quick chemistry he can definitely be in the running for the calder. Why not? Having two great linemates to carry most of the pressure will help. And really, as long as he can dish to Kane or Gooch in scoring areas he's bound to pick up some points. You're right though Tessier. I think most Winnipeg fans have tempered expectations, but inside are hoping for a giant year. |

Hey Pete. I haven't seen any of the training camp yet. I was wondering how you think Halischuck looks and if you think he's going to slot in on the third line by Oli and frolik. If he isn't, who do you think the 3rd line left winger will be? |

Wow....I can't believe the hate Scheifele is taking in here. I mean....I understand the Jets suck but who wouldn't want Mark Scheifele coming up on their team? He is 100% a Calder Candidate. They're not claiming he is going to win it. They're simply saying he's a candidate to win it. The only people who would claim he has no shot are people who don't seriously follow hockey. He's got all the tools and a great situation. Situation more than anything usually dictates who the favourites will be.
Don't hate just because he spent some time in Jr. To grow and develop. Not every team rushes they're physically immature first rounder to the show and let's him get manhandled and chronically injured by oversized men (cough cough RNH cough). I think the Jets deserve a little credit. Look out for Jacob Trouba also. Brighter days are coming for the Jets. |

As long as scheifele shows he is responsible defensively. Stays on his feet battles for puck possessions, he'll win the 2nd line centre job, get power play time. If he does all that, I believe 15 g and 40 a season is possible which will give him Calder consideration. |

He will have to beat Drouin, who will be playing a lot with two guys named Stamkos and St. Louis. |

I think it can be a few options and there is competition in camp. I haven't seen any training camp yet, been far too busy with my other job. What I think is different this year as opposed to the past two is that there is competition for spots to push players.
Now the quality of that competition may be a point of concern for some but it's a step in the right direction.

Yeah- that's true to but let's see how this plays out. If Scheifele gets similar points, anchors a second line and the team gets a post season spot (big if) then he should be in the conversation. |
