5) Philadelphia Flyers - they have too good of a team to not make the playoffs again this year.
4) San Jose Sharks - they have been on the cusp of greatness for too long. Their window is closing fast.
3) Toronto Maple Leafs - they need to rebound after what happened in the playoffs last year. Time to rise above boys.
2) Vancouver Canucks - see San Jose
1) Edmonton Oilers - longest playoff drought in hockey, how many 1st overall picks on the roster? Time to pay the fans back for all the losing. |

Eklund: My Top Five Most Desperate Teams in the NHL in 2013-14. Yours? - Eklund
I'd agree mostly, but the Oilers I would not say are as desperate as you think. Yes, they need to take some steps this year. But I think other teams like Philly and Pittsburgh are more under the gun. Pittsburgh got lucky with their one cup. If not for a couple key injuries Detroit would have walked on them and taken their cup. They have a lot of firepower but have greatly underachieved in the playoffs. Funny how everyone went on about how great Shero was. His moves proved not to help at all... |

Based on this column (which I agree with), I'm going with the Pens.

Toronto.
Made the playoffs for the first time in 4eva.
Can't take a step back now, and first round isn't good enough.
Big new acquisitions, letting guys go. Handing out big contracts.
Pressure is on. |

Vancouver isn't playing in the weak Northwest division this season. They will either miss the playoffs entirely or sneak in as a bottom seed. |

Don't agree about the Canucks. They have the best goalie in hockey (since the Schnieder trade) locked up forever. - Canada Cup
I didn't realize Lundqvist got traded to Vancouver... |

As long as the Leafs make the playoffs again, the fans will be fine this year.
If Vancouver takes a step back from last year, they'll need to be very concerned about fan support.
Edmonton is fine right now, the fans are looking for improvement and if they are close to competing for a spot, all will be well. I think next year will be more important to them.
What about teams like Florida and Phoenix - how long can they continue to play poorly in front of lower attendance before they are moved? I'd say they are more desperate.

So you're saying Toronto police should start making preparations for a riot for when the Leafs don't make it..... |

The Caps won't have ANY easy games in the division and when they do have an easy game it will be against a Metropolitan division team which likes to go down with a pound of flesh.

If it was a top 10 list, Winnipeg should be there. They need to make the playoffs or the poop will hit the fan.... starting with Noel and Pavelec. Folks will be questioning the long term signings (especially Little) and Chevy's ability to plan and ice a winning team. |

The buds will squeak in again this year. They're in a tough division, but they'll pull it off.

On an unrelated note does anyone know if the wings game will be televised? I heard no one was planning on televising it which is unfortunate since I want to stream it....., |

On paper maybe, but he folds under the pressure of the big games and lacks the team in front of him to succeed. |
