You might want to look at this slo mo and note that the first point of contact is indeed the head of Koivu.

It was an expensive contract but he's playing well enough that I can't complain. He plays big minutes and is vital to the team's PP.

Hmm, yeah, this appears to show that he did contact the head first. I'll have to go back again and look at what Koivu may have done just prior to that to see if maybe he put himself in this position in any way. I don't think Dubi took an improper angle and I don't think he did anything other than follow through on a proper body check though if the head was contacted then perhaps he deserved the penalty he received in the game.

I have to think he is. His defensive game is impressive for a 21 year old, and his offense looks like it is starting to come around. That being said, I don't think any player is untouchable for the right price, after all Gretzky was traded a few times

Slow mo head is contact? Are you watching the last replay that was the worst angle of the replays? That is the only angle that you could possibly make the smallest of arguments, and very small if you saw the from the front angle. Shoulder hits chest as Koivu starts to lower head. At what point did any part of did a part of Doubi touch Koivu in the head? If you see it take the Duck colored glasses off. Plus that fact they had to confer to make call and we all know 4 NHL refs figuring out what just happen usually is a mess. Bettman's boys blew it and I could argue cost the CBJ 2 pts. Am I wrong?????

The slo mo you are watching is what is making it look like a hit to head. At regular speed I am seeing shoulder hits chest and head whips around from that impact. Go by the slo mo and we have a no goal in Toronto who took 4 minutes of rewind play repeat and then hey by golly see that skate make a distinctive kicking motion.

They have access to the video at headquarters so surely they would be able to tell the head was first point of contact. That is why they have replays. I am not even a Ducks fan just a hockey fan that wants to get this bs out of the game, however you may want to give the columbus glasses a rest as well and be a little more objective, it is pretty clear evidence, even your blogger agrees.

It's not a late hit, but it is head contact. And I do take exception to Dubinsky's comment that he's not dirty. This guy can play dirty with the best of them. He also can't take a clean hit, just look at his over-reaction on the Volchenkov hit. That should have gotten a look from Shanaban for at least a fine.

What I don't get is people arguing that there wasn't contact with Koivu's head. Of course Dubinski made contact with his head. The after effects from Saku are all the proof you need there. If Dubinski hits him shoulder to shoulder or to the body, it's just as effective and Saku can continue to play. This is a good example.

As for a suspension, it's hard to argue for or against anymore since I have no clue what the hell constitutes a Shanaban.
