The more I think about the Downie trade, the more I think it will help this team.
It won't save them, but it will help them.

Are the odds of Scott Laughton centering the 4th line this season any better now Max is gone |

So when is Downie hosting his first players wives/girlfriends luncheon? - tpd11
Gotta be a story behind this one. |

great, the soap opera continues
if for no other reason, Downie intensifies our Pittsburgh rivalry, as soon as the other 17 skaters regain their hearts
That Anaheim game still pi$$es me off, "we stopped moving & just watched"
yeah, we're getting better. |

Laughton can only be called up in a temporary emergency basis. And he can not join the team permanently until his junior season is complete IIRC. |

Instead of gritty forward I'd go with brittle forward when referring to downie, Bill. |

Tim P posted a question if "you" liked or disliked the trade...here are my thoughts...
Not that the Flyers have ever been good at Cap flexibility…but this gives them some. Dump the remaining 2.5+ years of Talbot, and pick up a <1 year 2.65M of Downie, who is a rental for a year…long term this is smart if you think Talbot is going to continue to decline after the broken leg…
Character guys…too many of them now…Gil in the press box, Kimmo, Vinny, Streit…all good guys…only one of them has a goal…The team doesn’t need role playing character guys...they need finishers and goal scorers…
Age. Talbot is old Downie is young, the Chief wants to skate harder and faster, Talbot can’t do that anymore…it is clear watching the games he is not able to get in on the fore-check like he did in the past…just a fact of getting older…Downie will be able to skate like Chief wants and may fit better in HIS system…
I like Max, the header he took to the boards last week and then came out in the next period…damn warrior…I will miss that…heart and soul guy…yup, going to miss that too…but a guy that may not fit into the system and no real goal scoring and speed upside which is what chief needs in his system…
I give the Flyers a big up check…AS THE FIRST PART OF SEVERAL TRADES THAT ARE NOW HAPPENING…

I'd be surprised if a number of trades happen at this point. |

Something to consider for those who oppose the Downie trade. Imagine let's say it was the other way around and the Flyers sent Downie to COL in exchage for Talbot. How would you feel? I think you'd be lying to yourself if you felt it was a good trade for the Flyers, shipping away a top 9 forward for a 3rd/4th line checker/PKer. I realize its not black and white, that Downie may not have been given top line mins here right away and therefore may not have 7 points.
I think a lot of folks will complain no matter how good or bad the deal is. I'm sure many here have seen their favorite player traded away days after getting their jersey (Brind'amour/Williams/Richards for me) but in the end this is what makes me love this team. They're interesting and always active, to a fault at times, but becoming less emotional attached makes the trades easier to stomach.
I'm by no means proclaiming the Flyers won this deal hands down but I do think its a good move for the most part. Gives them more options in top 9 and I feel Raffl is already close to replacing what Talbot brings.
Edit: Sorry was back reading previous thread and saw Crims brought up this same exact point. Leight/Laught it is... |

You know, every team has these wife affair rumours. We had the old Brindy/ Lindros/ wife rumor, which most of us have heard
The only one I ever believed ( due to the source and later events) was Brendan Shanahan and Craig Janneys wife, whom he later married. The NHL rewarded him with a job after serving on the competition committee. But they suspended Sean Avery for merely making a sleazy remark about a former girlfriend
Go figure that line of thinking and PC.
On the trade, first of several as many others think. I like it, maybe the first line gets something happening with the chemistry if Downie is up there. Cant get much worse! |

Hopefully the trade talk will be a moot point tomorrow when the Downie - Giroux - Lecavalier line has a 8 point night in a rout of the Caps. |

It takes two teams to make a trade. The Flyers may desire to add a top defenseman or a top Winger to the team. But I don't see other teams willing to make those kinds of moves this early in the Season. But you never know. |

My greatest hope at this point is that Ed and Paul have one more stoopid move in them before Homer resigns and they trade Claude to any team except the Pens or Devils. Then the last reason for me to care about this franchise will be gone and I can rid myself of them.
