NFL does the same thing with their Breast Cancer awareness merchandise during the month of October. Very little of the money goes towards actual cancer research, just a gimmick to get more money. It's quite sad.

I was aware of the NFL's setup in that regard and it's why I looked into it for Hockey Fights Cancer. Disappointing.

I don't agree with what they are doing but I would still spend the money even if a little is going to charity.

You should donate the $80 that tie costs to cancer research, and draw yourself a picture of a tie instead. You could even tweet a photo of yourself and your art to the NHL, so they don't feel excluded from the process!

Why not just buy a tie much cheaper at the department store and give $30 to a local cancer charity?

I understand the NHL needs to make money off the sales, but to take such a large chunk just seems wrong IMO. They make money hand over fist with other merchandise products that it would be nice to see them take a hit for a month.

Ryan,

Thank you for bringing this to light. What a sham on the part of the NHL. If they were truly genuine in their effort, 100% of any profit margin on their part would be going to the cause. I hope Ek makes sure this stays at the top of the page.

Anyone who wants most of the money they donate to actually go to fighting cancer would be better served making a donation directly to one of the charities listed in this link from the American Institute of Philanthropy, which is a watchdog organization whose purpose is to monitor non profit institutions to make sure that money donated actually goes where it is supposed to:

http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html#cancer

There are a lot of solid cancer related charities here that make sure the vast majority of donations go directly to research or patient care. These offer a better opportunity for anyone wishing to make a donation to know their money is making a bigger difference.

I disagree. A multi-billion dollar business doesn't need to exploit charitable giving to make ANY money. Pay for your costs and GIVE the rest to those who need it. I'm sure the majority of the people purchasing this merchandise are unaware of how little of it ultimately ends up where it should.

Sad, but not surprised.

That is actually a good idea.

Lots of charities are running similar plans. The Color Me Rad has been taking $75-100K home while only donating between $1000-$5000 to selected charities. Meanwhile their whole promotion is to have fun for a worthy cause.

Honestly, when I see how much more of that tie sale goes to profit than to charity, you know what I think? Hockey related revenue. If you buy this tie, the NHL and NHLPA will argue over who deserves the bigger half of the ~$56 they made on your tie purchase.

At least we know the answer won't be cancer research.

I knew about the NFL gimmick and I had my Suspicions about the NHL too. End of the day if you really want to donate money to cancer reasearh do it yourself directly to an established charity.

Stuff like that makes me want to look into the Movemeber Organization if they are gettnig a big piece of the pie too

That's really sad. But yeah, instead of spending $80+ and having a few bucks go to charity, you should donate $30 directly and buy a nice $30 tie.

As a side note, I can't put up with the whining and lack of logic/reasoning in the Flyers forum. You guys mind if I camp out here for a while?

Movember wasn't started by the NHL. It has been adopted by it, there are other groups that were more involved that have slipped into the background with the dominance of the NHL taking over.

That's a pretty good idea. I think along with that people should tweet the NHL the picture of their new tie and larger donation to let them know they're fighting harder. Could actually get some traction.

I know I am aware of that, it started in Australia and Canada and the United States have taken over it.

But I mean in general its for prostate cancer as well, but its a identity as well. Never really looked into if its for awarness or proceeds go to research.

Same thing can be said for the Tough Mudder. Very little if any of the sign up costs go towards the wounded warrior project. You have to raise addditional money yourself to make any sort of charitable donation to that cause.

I was very dissapointed when I heard that.

In Canada, 87.2% of all funds raised goes to men's health programs.

If a charity can't show you their audited statements, they aren't a charity worth donating money or time to.

Even the most reputable charities are mostly a fraud

It's amazing how much "administration costs" there are that eat up the lions share of the donations

I'd be interested to see the stats on some of the player run charities, I'm actually surprised some reporters haven't taken on that kind of thing as an investigative report to make a name for themselves

Why dont you do that then? Vineyard Vines ties arent exactly cheap and I'm sure the 7 bucks they actually give is the profit they would make on the sale. Dont include shipping into this either, are they supposed to contact Fedex and make sure the money you pay for shipping goes the charity as well?

All in all, if you care that much about the charity then just donate directly to them.
