Matt Karash: Thoughts on Liles to Canes + Canes game day preview vs. Bruins

Completely agree on the Liles situation review... the only thing the Canes could be interested in him for is an upgrade on the puck moving side - and at his salary, there'd have to be a signficant portion that the Leafs would eat. The Leafs won't eat more than about 1M going forward because of the relative cost of buying Liles out at the end of the coming season would be less of a CAP hit ( I believe), so it wouldn't make sense.

Only way this deal happens is if
1) there's short term CAP coming back to Toronto
2) there's no CAP coming back to Toronto and the Leafs throw in a pick or prospect to sweeten the pot

It isn't that Liles is worthless, its that the Canes have a tight CAP situation of there own.

Hopefully the canes learned a lesson when they got Kaberle. Acquiring offensive d men from Toronto usually results in depression

This would clearly be a backfill move and a prelude to a larger deal likely involving Gleason. Perhaps a 7th for Liles and Gleason for Hemsky?

Two things about both Liles and Hemsky, they are names we have heard around the Canes for years. These are not new players the JR has suddenly taken a liking to.

They didn't get Kaberle from Toronto.

I'm not opposed to Liles at all from the standpoint of what he brings to the table, however all of the issues that Matt and others have brought up are what kills it. The Leafs won't take back much in the way of salary, and not beyond this season. JR is going to hit up Nonis to eat as much of Liles' salary as is possible. The canes have a lot of Dmen right now, though none have the skill set + experience that Liles does. If JR is looking to move out a guy like Gleason for another piece, then this makes more sense. On the surface though, it does seem unlikely...for now...

I just dont see Liles coming to Raleigh. They have 8 D and are a budget conscious team. They dont always hold the purse strings tight but I cant see us adding a 4 million $ guy without shipping one out. Gleason has a NTC and wears an A.

Bellmore is a younger faster version of Gleason. He pairs well with Hainsey. Murphy has been dynamic and sitting him the other night to get Gleason a game was tragic. Harrison has been solid for a bottom guy and has helped Murphy along. I would hope to see the 2 stick together. Then your top pair Faulk/Sekera. This is a very underrated paring. They draw the minutes and the tough assignments. Not altering it. So where would Liles be inserted? The only option is to put him with Hainsey on the 2nd paring and that means having Bellmore sit in the press-box or go back to the Checkers.

So considering they have 2 experienced D man (Tim and Mike) sitting in the pressbox I highly doubt Liles is a consideration.

The Canes have 1 to many D currently... I wouldnt think they would add 1 without moving 2. That would change the balance alot. Carolinia's D hasnt been the issue and their D is in far better shape than needing to add Liles.

Now you have a 3rd line center available? Lets talk....

Bellemore might be younger than Gleason , but he is no way faster than Gleason . After the first few strides I am sure Gleason would beat him fairly easy.

The only way this deal makes sense if it is as illustrated in Mike Augello's blog. A straight up trade of defensemen. Liles for Gleason. No one eats salary and everyone hopes that the different type of player will be a better fit for each respective team.
