I'll admit I'm not, and never was (even the first time around), a Downie fan. I just don't think he makes the team better. It's just that simple, I don't like his game. Or, I should say, I like what his game is supposed to be, but don't think he does it well. |

Downie isn't the only one who could benefit from the break. Lecavalier needs to heal up, as well...he can use a tap of the old reset button, to try and get back to his level of play before he got hurt - Jsaquella
Yup, couldn't agree more regarding Vinny. But it could go either way with him depending on what's been the reason for his slump. If his back is still an issue then the rest would certainly do him good. But if his back is ok, and to be honest his play has picked up in the last few games, then this break could set him back a little bit instead.
At the end, all Im hoping for is that the olympians come back in one piece. |

I like Downie more than you. I think he can really add to the team. He played so well with Couturier and Read earlier this season. |

First off, Downie sucks. Plays hockey like a little girl since getting injured. Second, Vinny needs to be moved to center position. How so? Trade B. Schenn. Yes, i love Schenn, but I would love Vanek even more. So would the whole team and city of Philly. I think it would be nice idea to trade schenn in a packaged deal with mez a draft pick and possibly another prospect for Vanek. Yes, Vanek could walk at end of season, but what if he liked Philly enough to stay. How could you not with Voracek and Giroux on your line? Regardless, in the package trade, mez is gone and schenn isn't signed yet, and he isn't going to come super cheap if we want him to stay. With the cap going up next year, maybe a vanek signing could happen. Offense would be set:
vanek-giroux-voracek
Hartnell-Vinny-Simmonds
Read-Couts-Downie (Raffl if signed)
rinaldo-laughten-whoever else
May be a bit far fetched but it would be pretty flipping sweet to have Vanek in the orange and black - arichardson22

BSchenn for six weeks of Vanek is the worst trade idea I've heard in many years.
I hope Downie can get his game back, but if not he can walk in the offseason and it's not a big loss. That turnover against Calgary Bill mentioned was shockingly bad. A playoff bubble team can't afford to have a guy making mistakes like that in the lineup. |

Not really if we can sign Vanek past the season. Schenn is free agent as well. both possible rentals |

You're joking right?
B Schenn is an emerging ppg player, and you want to trade him for a rental ufa. Not only that, but you want to add a draft pick (most likely a 1st) and another prospect (most likely laughton, or cousins)??
It's boneheaded moves like these that have killed the depth in the system |

Schenn is a restricted free agent. There is a big difference. |

Schenn is a RFA in line to make around $3m, and Vanek will want $7m+ a year. |

He's been streaky and could command a good chunk of cash. Him at center also effects Vinny playing an unnatural position of RW. All that money on Vinny to play RW and its not working the way we all hoped. I was thinking defensive prospect since Islanders are looking for D |

Great writeup Bill.
When Downie is playing his game he's creating havoc on the forecheck, keeping defenders honest and altering gap space and timing in the neutral zone. He's separating man from puck. Buzzing around the net and creating turnovers. He's sticking up for his teammates. He's got that 'it' factor, that compete factor and fiery demeanor that resonates with Philadelphia Flyers fans. This is the Downie I want to see for the remainder of the season. That Downie gets a pass for occasional penalties. |

If the Flyers offered Schenn straight up for Vanek, the Islanders would sign the deal and drive Vanek to Philly before you can say Bueberry pie |

I can see Schenn being signed to a bridge deal much like Couturier's. Something like 2 yrs @ 2.25 per. Not gonna break the bank, and will allow Schenn to continue improving his game.
I hope Vinny just needs time to completely recover from his broken back. Also, it takes time to get acclimated to playing wing as opposed to center. |

Schenn's cap hit will actually decrease due to a heavy incentive deal Schenn signed for his entry level contract. His cap hit is over $3M right now. |

I was hoping we already would have had that bridge deal signed this far in the season, but it makes me scratch my head why we haven't and makes me wonder if we are going to trade schenn |

Schenn's camp talked with the Flyers in the offseason and agreed they'd resume talks after this season. He will be resigned, and there's no way you trade him for Vanek. And yes, his cap will will actually decrease with his next deal. |
