I can't believe we received any value at all for Erat, to be honest. At this point, Caps fans would have been happy to dump his contract for next year. |

Agreed on the Erat deal. Why did the Yotes give up anything of value is beyond me? |

james (and anyone else who watched the coyotes), based on your article i think i know your answer but whats your objective opinion on klesla since he was waived? did he not crack the lineup bc he isnt good? the other dmen are better? injured? |

I was looking forward to seeing Brown develop. I agree the Czech thing is getting old, especially when Vrbata himself is a free agent.
I am still on wait and see mode today. I like what Hemsky could bring this team, but injuries scare me. Ultimately this may all be for a first round exit at best |

Klesla used to a physical solid defensive defenseman. Recently, his mobility has been killed by injuries/ the toll of ten years in the league. The Coyotes have a deep defensive group, but would love a physical fifth or sixth dman who can PK and be a shutdown guy. Unfortunately, Klesla just doesn't have the mobility to be that guy consistently. My guess is that he is pretty much done. |

It really is unfortunate because it makes more sense to move out the UFA Vrbata than it does to bring in a guy like Erat. Stocking up on picks and youth should be the priority, not trying to squeak into the playoffs with duds like Erat. If you noticed, last year at the deadline Nashville got Filip Foresberg for Erat, and that kind of return should be possible for Vrbata now, which would be much better in my opinion.
I am all for trying to get into the playoffs, but I would like to see an ambitious move to acquire a first line player. If you aren't going to be ambitious, i say regroup because you could get a good haul for Vermette, Vrbata et al. |

I just want to add that if a fourth rounder gets you Dustin Penner, how does it cost Chris Brown to get Erat? |

I agree. It's not a fire sale, but it cant hurt to gauge the interest around the league for a guy like Vrbata. I like Vrbata, but I feel like the team is stuck in this never ending bond with Hanzal, and pick a forward to join the chemistry. When the focus should be on a legit first liner.
I think a guy like Bailey from the Islanders could find a spot with this team, and he has done some penalty killing before. |

I think when you are the Coyotes (and I have compared them to the Blue Jays before for lots of reasons) you have to look at getting guys who have talent and a high ceiling but may be for whatever reason not working out where they are. I think Bailey is a perfect example of a guy they should try this with. |

Yotes gave up nothing of value to us in either of these trades. Chris Brown was going to be nothing more than a Kyle chipcura here and klesla is probably done In the nhl. Erat was successful in a very similar Nashville and every guy on the roster is stoked he's coming. |

I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment if Maloney. The guy has vision that none of us have. He traded away 2 players that couldn't crack the team and added a 2nd rounder and erat, a guy that will flourish on the Czech line. |

Sorry, but its not that a second rounder is a bad return, it's the fact that they traded the third overall pick for essentially nothing. As Turis blossoms into a great player, the Coyotes took what they got for him and sabotaged his value.
As for Erat HE HAS ONE GOAL. The same amount as goalie Mike Smith.
If he was a UFA, it might not be so bad, but he is a 4.5 cap hit next year, virtually unmovable and thus will prevent them from adding someone else.
Secondly, its ridiculous for someone to say "The players are happy about his trade" because, they might be, but you don't know that and they sure aren't going to criticize it publicly.
And Chris Brown could turn into a good power forward. He has youth, size and a scoring touch. Is he a sure-fire star? Not at all, but the Coyotes are super thin as far as forward prospects go, so this is a bad trade. There is almost no upside and Brown could haunt them. |

If he was so successful in Nashville as you presume, why did the Preds dump him to the Caps for a minor leaguer? |

I have agreed with every article and assessment you have made until now. A 2nd rounder for Runds (a player who will never get a chance here because of D depth, and Summers may be an nhler but has been in our system for years and never shown the nhler) for a 2nd rounder! HELL yes! Erat, well GMDM has been chasing him for years, he can be good and he loves the physical and defense game... Hemksy is gone so hopefully there is another scorer out there and playoff bound we will be... |

it is actually a good return. Turris refused to "earn" his way on to the roster and believed he didn't have to go to the minors that he should have been nhl from day 1 and he showed glimpses of stardom but was very inconsistent. So considering the situation and that we got a couple years out of klesla and vermette from the turris trade, it was a B+ deal... So hes excelling in, great... he could have excelled here except for he was a cry baby and wanted things handed to him and not grow through the process like anyone else. Hes no Crosby or Malkin whom both deservedly so both were pure super stars and didn't need the minor leagues. Just for the mentality Turris had shown he needed the minor leagues.... |

Hey man, thanks for normally agreeing with me! We'll have to agree to see differently on this one though! I hate both of these trades passionately. It angers me that the team can't either go for a proper rebuild or do something aggressive and interesting. These moves indicate to me that they are in a non-competitive no-man's land. They still have no first line players.
As far as Turis, I don't care how it gets spun, if you draft a guy third overall and end up with nothing but a couple of seconds, that isn't any good. I know they partially used the move to get Vermette, but one or two good years from a decent third liner doesn't make up for totally blowing that high of a pick, in my opinion.
And as far as Erat, its the 4.5 million cap hit next year that bugs me. A team has no right to any good will if they won't spend to the cap, and adding Erat basically just negates the increase in cap between this year and next. Its a cheapo move too because he gets paid much less than his cap hit.
Overall, if I seem to be being too harsh, I apologize, it's not like these are total unforgivable disasters, but I also think its important to be critical of a team that has like maybe two or three total beat reporters who act like franchise stooges. Reading the news last night I woulda thought Erat was a 23 year old potential star, instead of a 30+ year old one goal scorer.
Either way, those are just my opinions, and maybe its the nature of blogging that it seems like I am stating them as facts, but I am always open to alternate opinions and suggestions. So thanks not just for reading, but commenting too. |

That's what I love about your blog vs previous Yotes bloggers not only are they fact driven but passionate also. Im an avid Yotes fan and you make some very good and valid points, maybe im just way to used to GMDM and his style. I do believe the ownership will push him to be more of an aggressive wow popping deal maker but he still has to shake the low budget nhl ownership running things first... |

I would lose a crap load of respect for GMDM if he didn't make another trade at deadline... At least a goal scorer... Come on |

Maloney should be fired plain and simple.Look at his moves in the last year all bad!!!Signed Chipchura,Korpokoski,Schlemko,Ribero (bad only because he has nobody to pass the puck too who can score)Mike Smith( I know you have a hard on for him because he's from Canadia ehh)but he sucks, too many soft goals and lately one of his strengths playing the puck has become a weakness and only because of the coyotes best player Yandle bailing him out his goals against isn't any worse,Jeff Halpern, trading Runblad and Breisbois for a second round pick a joke and the biggest joke getting that bum Erat with his 1 empty net goal this year to help our stagnant offense come on not to mention his 4.5 million salary the Yotes are on the hook for makes this a horrible trade.Maloney should be fired asap because if this is a sign of things to come in 4 years the Coyotes will be in Seattle or Quebec. As for our deep defensive talent first of all James you overrate OEL big time because while I like him he is not a physical defenseman and he leaves a lot to be desired and definitely no Norris trophy in the near future into he realizes his potential (Yandle is our best defenseman sorry)and now with Runblad,Klesla and Morris gone (his contract is up at end of season)the Yotes d-core depth has taken a hit. This team doesn't have a good core for the future(even with Domi,Samuelson,,Murphy,Gormley, and Visentin in the minors Maloney will probably keep them there for 5 more years)a lot of old age veterans and fourth line 2 way contracts plugs who can't score plus a overrated overpaid goalie who has self confidence issues. The only move I can give Maloney credit for is Mikael Boedker although he just needs to shoot the damn puck more but I can come back with another bad non move not resigning goalie Chad Johnson,go ahead laugh but look what he is doing with Boston the same thing he was doing with the Yotes last year winning with a great save percentage and a low goals against average.Would have been a much better option and cheaper option then that bum Smith in net.So with Maloney as GM the future for the Coyotes looks pretty bleak!!! |

Hemsky went for a 3rd and a 5th and we were offering a 2nd and a prospect, so we were offering a descent price for him. Better than a 3rd and a 5th anyways... |
