Adam Kirshenblatt: HHOF Making the Case: Paul Henderson

Jesus no, he shouldn't be in the HOF. I don't really care that this moment was important to some people, you don't enshrine a career because of a moment.

He was an average player who scored one important goal. And once all the 60+ aged hockey crowd dies off, nobody will be talking about him anymore.

Do something like the stick shown above if you want, enshrine the moment, give the series a little museum-esque section in the HOF, whatever.

But the bottom line is that Paul Henderson getting into the HOF would make it a complete (frank)ing joke to any players from other nationalities, a Canadian sham instead of a legitimate honor.

Paul Henderson might be suited for mention in the Museum of Hockey, but not the HOF.

Henderson should not be in the Hall of Fame, his moment should be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. I don't think you'll get many people disputing that. Henderson was a key player on that team (perhaps even the MVP) but his overall career wasn't enough to get a spot in the Hall. The Hockey Hall of Fame has a great set up where great hockey moments are preserved before getting to the Hall. That's where the '72 team belongs. Electing someone into the special Hall, purely based on one tournament would severely tarnish the integrity of the Hall.

Wrong. But if that's the criteria for the HHOF, they can induct him along with Jim Craig and/or Mike Eruzione.

No way, thats the last thing that guy needs, he has profited himself enough off of that goal to no end. He doesnt need anything to increase his appearance fees to the 100s of conventions and signings he goes to.

The HHOF is already a joke with a Selection Committee that allows bias and personal grudges to decide who gets in and who doesn't. Several players who I would consider that had mostly average NHL/international careers have gotten in, so why shouldn't Henderson? The fact of the matter is, he was the most recognizable member of a team that created a moment in hockey history that likely will never be forgotten. Every member of the HHOF has that defining moment that are shown ad naseum over and over in the museum. If it was up to me, I personally wouldn't give him a plaque, but then, if it was me, several players would also lose their plaques as well. If you want to have a real HOF, do it like the Baseball Hall of Fame does.
