Thanks Stu... I never knew that after the fact protocol even existed in the book. Maybe the league feels they would be inundated with video to review since there is a dive/embellsihment on at least 5 plays during any given day. |

What team taught the league how to dive in the 70's? Crosby doesn't dive your just so used to seeing him make unbelievable plays that when he falls you think to yourself "no way is Crosby human" |

One mistake in the article was when you said the potential punishment is just a two minute penalty - wrong! Have you ever seen just a diving penalty called? They are always accompanied with a tripping call on the other player.
I can never figure out how you can have tripping and diving on the same play, they either tripped them or not! |

Great article! I was just mentioning this in one of Ek's previous blogs this week. I didn't know there was a rule and it's just not being enforced. Very strange tho? It may be the only way to start bringing more integrity to the game and make the refs job more efficient. |

Not that there is not an issue here but I think they need to get other issues with larger priority taken care of...like head shots and douchebags like Cooke. |

One of the problems is that the refs on the ice are really in a no win situation. That's a call that is probably behind the play 50% of the time and at best they might get right 10% of the time. So if the league steps in, maybe they feel like they're showing the refs up. |

I have never understood why NHL referring experience is not on the list of job requirements to be ‘director of player discipline’ with the NHL. |

Stu, - what do you think of ref's always calling both tripping/diving at same time?
I've never seen a diving penalty called.

Mr. Stewart, I've held a theory for a very long time that there is a simple way to stop embellishment...institute a 3 (or 5...whatever's reasonable) second rule. When a player has been hit/tripped/high sticked, a 'timer' starts. If the player is not hurt, he'll know he has to get up; if he is hurt and cannot get up, it should be mandatory that the player be immediately removed from the ice for medical evaluation...for the player's well being. I firmly believe that 'divers' will want to stay on the ice and the medical staff will evaluate the truly injured in a sensible manner. Your thoughts? |
