Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: More on Miller, Re-signing RFAs, How Much Money Left? After handing goaltender Ryan Miller a $6 million-a-year contract on Tuesday, the Vancouver Canucks will need to manage their money carefully if they hope to add a high-profile scorer to their roster.

How about Lack as a piece in a trade for a player like Kane or even Sharp from the Hawks?

I think the Jets will be holding tight for a 2015 1st rounder in a Kane deal. They dont want just old age pending UFA's either. Its going to be roster player/s, reasonable prospect, 2015 1st rounder.

Burrows, Shink, 2015 1st might get it done.... but I think other teams may be able to better that.

Lack is a piece I'm starting to think Benning will part with. He may be a piece the Jets look at.

With only 18 NHL games under his belt, Linden Vey doesn't have much leverage. His cap hit was $790,000 last season. Let's ballpark him at maybe $1.2?

- Carol Schram

I think that is a very liberal estimation at 1.2mil. I wouldn't be surprised to see it at 1mil or just under. (sorry, nitpickin..)

If we can get Kane coming into his prime at that cap hit at a reasonable price, I think we would be crazy not to. I could see WD and the Canuck environment on the whole as a positive one for Kane. Maybe, I am Franked. But he is a good player with the tools to do more. Guy has swagger, just needs a bit more balance or everything he does is blown out of proportion.

Lack is a decent backup, he's not a starter yet and might never be one. Canucks can't go into the season with Markstrom as the backup, way too much uncertainty with him. Not sure if he can be sent down to Utica without waivers, but that's where he should spend the year.

Everyone agrees we are going to be bad for the next 2-3 years so why waste money on Miller? I would rather have filled in the roster with some mean character guys so at least we could win a few fights.

It is either trade him or embrace the coming goalie controversy. Lack has always seemed to play pretty well, even as a backup with limited playtime.

Maybe I am going all Negative Nancy here, but I picture Miller at some point early in the season to struggle or not have his best game and then it is Lack's turn and puts in a solid performance and bam, another stupid controversy.

Because they are trying to convince the not-so-savy hockey fan ( the majority of season ticket holders) that they are not going to be bad next season.

Its trade or play Markstrom. I agree he needs to play on the farm but he cant be sent down without waivers. Someone will grab him for sure.

Signing Miller means one of the two goes. Lack will ask to be moved by mid next season anyways.

Markstrom could be a piece then... but he isnt NHL ready in the eyes of GM's yet... which brings up concerns about his future at this point. Lack has shown he can win games all on his own.... he's a safe gamble for a team looking to add a back up( at the very least) who has the potential to very soon be a solid #1.

Could they loan him to a Swedish team or something or would he still have to clear waivers?

The problem is if he isn't NHL ready, what team wants to trade for him and then ask if he isn't ready to be a back up in the NHL and don't want chance using him that way then isn't this new team in the same waiver predicament?

(sorry for that sentence)

I like Sharp. He would be a good fit here.

Have you been to a game recently, most people their are more concerned about posting selfies of themselves on social media at the game than they are about what is taking place on the ice.

Trading Lack seems the better option. Likely to get more for him and it takes away a possible distraction. People are already talking goalie controversy, might as well get rid of that distraction. That's assuming they have faith in Markstrom

Goaltending doesnt sell tickets. Canucks wouldnt lose as many fans if they scored goals. There's not a fan around right now that doesnt already know that the Canucks cant score. Goaltending was our strongest position last season and it lost fans.... they need to score goals to win rather than missing the playoffs in spite of great goal tending.

Yes we all know Miller can still put up amazing numbers on a team who cant make the playoffs. Seen it year after year lately... No point in proving that here as well.
