Great write up. Feels good to see and read about a reliable guy between the pipes. Kept us in countless games last year. |

Mason was so good in the playoffs that I don't know how anyone could have watched those games and still think he doesn't have what it takes to win a cup. |

Nicely done, Bill! So many people around the league just fall in line with this narrative and I doubt many watched many Flyers games where Mason was clearly the team's best player at times last year.
My worry is that Flyers fans actually overvalue the current team, in general, because I think Mason's work in the net against the Rangers made that series closer than it really was, IMO. |

I still think JR was thinking of Chris Mason and not Steve Mason in his remarks.
JR might always have "HOT SPROTS TAKE", but you don't go to him for meaningful analysis. |

Kind of the point of a goodgoalie though.
Certainly Henrik did the same for the rangers |

I think Steve Mason is a very solid goalie like many people in Philly. He was definitely not the issue last year. JR knows where to shoot off when he needs ratings or a reminder he is still alive. |

Fair point and interesting topic. As most things it's probably a combination of team d and goalie and how they work together that make for a good match.
A relevant question for everyone including Bill: where would you rank Mason right now in the league?
Example:
1. Henrik
2. Quick
3. Price
4. Pikka
5. Smith
6. Rask
7. Crawford
8. Bob
9. Mason |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Mason, Roenick, Quick Hits - bmeltzer
My issue with Roenick isn't his opinion, it's that he obviously is just talking out of his ass.
Hell, most of us do research when we post here. He gets paid to be an analyst, but all he really does is dump hot takes left & right, like a Steve Simmons with better hair. |

this is hard, because as to your point, how someone plays in a system is super important.
I think smith is a prime example. (As was bryz before him)
Kari is good in dallas, but is that system or goalie?
bishop in tampa?
I think if you take smith and mason off your list, I would take the rest of them as stand alone guys in net and everyone else, while good enough to be an nhl goalie is more reliant on their team system than the rest of your list.

It's easier that way.
Studio Host: So, let's talk about Philly's chances, JR(or EJ or Milbury or Dave or Noodles)...
Analyst: Oh, well their goaltending sucks. |

When Tampa was in the playoffs, and Bishop was hurt, they got swept. Bishop's pretty good. |

Varlamov. He should have won the Vezina last season, and honestly, the Hart as well. He was incredible for the Avs.

I think Tampa will be the team to beat in the East this year.

He was a WALL, all season he saved this teams ass. Then he turned it up a notch in the playoffs. He is legit. Just a 25 year old goalie who has found his way. CBJ threw him into the fire at such a young age for a goalie. |

You could justifiably rank him anywhere from about 7th to 15th. Goalies are really hard to rank/compare as so much depends on the team in front of them. |

Exactly, I do more research in putting out my top 10 lists, than JR does as a "professional" analyst.

Few problems here. Henrik is not #1. Top 3.. I 'll give him that. Quick has earned #1
Smith is overrated on your list as well as Crawford.
Bob may need to slide down as well. He doesnt perform in the playoffs..... |

Oh yeah and some of the recent goalies are Upper echelon. Shut up! Mason is good enough, anyone with a brain can see that.
Couple names, Leighton and Niemi were in the cup, and one of the average goalies won it |

We always have fits with them.
Not to mention Stevie Y went out and made some nice additions with Stralman, Garrison, and Boyle.
I was kind of hoping Hexy would have made an upgrade for our team. |
