Good read on Nill, loved the chart on poopty moves. Though I think the Ott deal gets the Blues on that list.

Yeah. I don't know, I didn't loathe the Ott deal, but it wasn't good. OTOH, the assets they gave to "upgrade" from Halak to Miller struch me as worse.

If I wasn't completely convinced that Nill was the brains of the operation in Detroit before, I certainly am now.

Compare with today's article on NHL.com about how Detroit doesn't have an analytics guy "yet" but Babcock "loves" the idea. Maybe they'll get one in time to not sign Cleary again next July.

Sigh.

P.S., great interview Yost. Always enjoy reading your stuff.

I'm hoping PMac moves Ryan down to the 2nd line for the start of the season anyways, have him on the left side of Zib, and that gives Lazar a shot at a Top 9 RW position for his 9 game stint. If he's sent down afterwards then you can just shift Ryan back on the right side and insert Hoffman back in the lineup.

MacArthur-Turris-Stone
Ryan-Zibanejad-Chiasson
Michalek-Legwand-Lazar
Greening-Smith-Neil
Hoffman-Condra

This is also assuming that we only carry 7D at the start of the season, either by trading one away or having Ceci start in the minors like Zib did last year because of Da Costa not being waiver exempt.

Jim Nill and Tom Gaglardi turned this franchise around in 12 months. I actually like Ottawa a lot, so I hope you guys eventually get an owner willing to spend and bring the sens back into Stanley Cup talk again. You guys are the only Canadian team I'd cheer for. But until you guys get an owner who'll shed out money, send us Ryan

I like the look of our team tbh ,people having it pegged for the bottom 5 (mostly hab fans ) are going to be in for a rude awaking .This team is big, young, fast and skilled

I have been highly critical of Melnyk. Hopefully he is gone sooner than the beginning of the season.

Yet, what Murray has had to do to compensate for the internal budget is actually the right way of addressing the foundational core of a team. This is a very good young team. The first five man unit with Turris and Karlsson on the ice together is really going to be strong.

I think they need another five man unit (perhaps Zibanejad's line) to play with Karlsson for half their shifts. I think Legwand will be the surprise of the season and will prove out to be a very effective center playing tough minutes.

Travis' interview of Jim Nill was first class reporting and one of the better hockey reads this summer.

Team needs one power forward. Team needs the Dman that is entirely complementary to the game that Karlsson plays (I probably like Edler based on his play at the Olympics). But, overall this is a good team. Making the playoffs should not be the only measure of where they are on the development curve.

Cowen and Anderson are big question marks. If those two step up come next season this team is definitely a Playoff team.

Also this team is way too overcrowded, I'm really surprised a deal hasn't sent a few plugs out to make room for rookies. Puempel, Lazar, Grant, Pageau, Prince can all make the team. You got to think they get flipped if there's no room for them..

Strange how Detroit fans are down on Legwand. He ended up being the leading scorer on their roster. His numbers rate out at a similar pace with the games he played in Nashville. Yet, Detroit fans were unhappy with his contribution. Listening to the drive home Team 1200 they are very positive about Legwand and the big speed he will add to an already fast Ottawa line up.

We will see soon enough, the first TV exhibition game is 2 months from today.

Think Lehner's going to be like 3x2.6ish.

Anything under 2.8 I think is a great deal for Ottawa. 3YD, I believe, retains his RFA.

His numbers had more to do (with Detroit anyways) with coming in and playing with a red hot duo of Franzen and Nyquist. After a couple of games both Nyquist and Franzen got cold and lines got mixed up and Legwand didn't produce much after that...to the point where he ended up being a 4th line winger in the playoffs centered by Glendening who couldn't win faceoffs. I didn't see the speed you keep talking about with him or the good defensive center. Aside from the first few games, he just didn't add much in any aspects for the Wings other than being a band aid to try and make the playoffs while 4 or 5 centers were injured at the time of the trade.

The main thing that pissed fans off about Legwand isn't even really about him but about what they gave up for him. Jarnkrok ended up with 9 points in 12 games with the Preds after the trade...almost as many as Legwand in almost half the games. Wings center depth with top 6 potential was already razor thin before the trade and Legwand had no future with the Wings. Wings ended up drafting 5 or 6 centers this summer and signing Nosek to make up for losing Jarnkrok and to add some depth at that position in the system. Plus there is also the fact Jarnkrok wasn't even given a chance to play a game for the Wings with all the injuries down the middle.

You add all those things up and I think you can see why fans weren't overly happy with Legwand even if some of it had nothing to do with him. Feels like Holland wasted assets for a band aid when he could have used those assets in a package for something they still need like a power forward or more importantly the right handed puck moving defenseman they lacked since Rafalski retired.

Hearing him on the radio; they guy's so happy here in Ottawa. He's a solid 2nd pairing D-man that will play quality mins on the PK and even strength. Also a good leader that cares about winning

Get him signed: 5 years @ $ 3.5M

1. Condra > Greening or Neil
2. Lazar plays over either Greening or Neil
3. Weircioch plays.
4. I think Zibanejad will steal that 2C from Legwand very quickly.

I'm kind of surprised to see people describing the team in terms of having #1a and #1b lines. Personally, I think the top line is clear as day - the real mess is actually a #2a and #2b second line situation, which basically amounts to Legwand and Zibanejad centring for whichever 4 you like best of Michalek, Chiasson, Stone, Lazar, Greening, or Hoffman.

Of course, nobody seems to pay much attention to the fact that MacArthur, Michalek, Greening, and Hoffman are the only natural LW on he roster, which creates something of an inevitable dogfight at RW between Ryan, Chiasson, Stone, Lazar, Neil, and Condra, especially when you factor in some of the 'political' issues around players like Ryan, Chiasson, and Lazar heading into this training camp.

agreed. i would have liked ottawa to keep him, but i think they would have had to pay more than he's worth to make it happen. plus, pretty convinced he wanted to play with spezza.

Maybe. Seguin and Benn isn't exactly slumming it tho.
