Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks Game Review: Beating the Oilers to Wrap Solid Preseason Question marks remain around the new Vancouver Canucks after an underwhelming win over the Edmonton Oilers to wrap up their preseason schedule on Saturday at Rogers Arena.

The team should expect a lot from Shawn Matthias, he was the only real return on the Luongo deal (so far). Funny no one has heard a peep from Gillis or Torts yet. Aquilini gag order I would suspect. At least with Benning and Willie, we don't have to put up with the arrogance.

Why would we have heard anything from either of them? Not only are they both still getting paid but it's not common practice to make volatile statements about your previous employers
Edit: It's also not Matthias' fault that he was brought over in that trade. He is a 3rd-4th liner just because he was traded for our old franchise goalie doesn't mean he is supposed to produce like a top 6 forward

A win is a win. As you mentioned Carol ,we did good in the first and got outplayed by an undermanned squad in the second and third. Everyone can be their own judge of how to look at last nights game.

I think this team is in need of two big trades to make this offense better. That is hard to do without selling the farm. Benning will need to be creative to accomplish that.

The preseason was just that, we only played one playoff team so it is very hard to gauge anything at all.

I did like glimpses into the future .

Very well said.

I like Mathias intensity in the last two games.

Yea I've never had a problem with his game. If we lack true top six talent it isn't his fault. I would like to see some more physicality from him though

It is easier to be more physical IMO when you have linemates who play the same way. If you have someone that has your back , you can be tougher.

I think a 4 th line of Sestito Mathias Dorsett who play aggressive with big hits can go a long way on this team

I wouldn't mind seeing Horvat on that line either (on the wing) as Matthias isn't the greatest in the faceoff circle and I think Horvat needs to up his physicality as well. I think that's a very excellent forechecking line that could really give some top lines hell

Sbisa should have been benched after that awful give away. What the hell was he thinking?

I don't expect much to be truthful this year.

Was it you that mentioned Daniel at 18 goals would be a win? Hank will probably end up with 16 and Vrbata I suspect about 22. On most top teams those are second line numbers.

Burrows with 5 is 4 th line numbers

Kassian Higgens and HANSEN have third line numbers . This team has got to start moving some players or it is the same as last year which is fine with me.

Yakipov was the only player in the clear and not tied up. It was a hell of a pass

I said 20 would be a win, and I think he can still put up 20 goals. Yea you would hope that you'd have at least one player cracking 30 and if not that you've got at least 5-6 20 goal scorers and are getting 8-15 goals from your 3rd/4th liners and D. I don't think we'll see more movement until we get a decent sample size from this group under this management/coaching staff

If you can keep the goals against down, you don't need to have a big goal scorer, at least not a 30+ one. The 30+ goal scorers tend to be puck hogs and unless they have the talent (or strength) of say an Ovechkin or Stamkos, they're easy to defend against. Personally, I would be fine if our top line produces at least a point a game. I'm more worried about our D then our forwards TBPH, Hamhuis is declining at an alarming rate (probably because he logs the most and hardest minutes), Edler is inconsistent, Bieksa is erratic, Tanev is solid but not ready (or capable enough) to be a 1/2 D-man on the roster, Corrado needs protection and more seasoning, Stanton is a 6/7 D but not much else, Sbisa... the less said the better.

Trading 3rd line players isn't going to get you 2nd line scores. You seem to be the only one that doesn't believe we have a new coach and system.

Well Daniel in his hey-day of 30 goal consistency was not a puck hog but I see your point

OV is the only puck hog who scored more than 30.

- bezz44

I was just going to add that. Over 25 goals there was Kesler and OV . So only two players that scored more than 25 goals would have that reputation of a selfish player.

if you meant Kessel ,I guess he could be added to that list.

Stamkos is a little bit of a puck hog, not as much as a Kes/Kessel/OV, Neal too (even though I'll admit that's a bad comparison due to playing with Crosby who feeds him the puck)

Yeah 8 of the guys from last nights line up were either sent down or waived today.

Could be that maybe they knew it was their last chance to show and played their guts out. But it was underwhelming as you said by the Nucks.

I think most puck hogs need a guy to feed it to them in order to be really successful. Kes had Henrik and Daniel on the PP, Ovi has Backstrom.
