Tim Panaccio: On Berube, Morin, Timonen, No. 1 D-man - tpanaccio
It's December 14th. The Flyers today are closer in the wild card race than the 3 seed. What the do you mean by this? Forget Washington, Flyers will also have to pass the Rangers for the 3.
Sanheim is currently tracking to be the best bet if any of the prospects turn into a #1.
Morin is not in the same stratosphere as Pronger if you were to compare them at this age.
Nice blog. |

Travis Sanheim is more likely to be a number one defenseman than anyone the Flyers currently have on the roster or in the system. - Jsaquella
let hope Sanheim and Morin are a stellar first pair. Ghost and Hagg a solid second pair. |

I think Hagg could end up better than Morin. |

wow!
That seems like either high praise for Hagg or that Morin may not pan out. |

I think the morin hype train has a lot to do with his size, which is nice but is not the end all be all of a player's outcome (look at how Myers has regressed).
Hagg is a better skater, moves the puck better, has a better shot (in terms of getting it off) and better hockey sense. Now those things could certainly change in the future, but right now it's not that big of a stretch to say Hagg could end up being better. |

Morin is a lot more raw than Hagg. Both have work to do, but Hagg has a lot of skill and ability. Morin has made some big strides in just a season, though. |

I agree. Morin really hasn't shown enough offense to say he is going to be anything more than a defensive defenseman who won't kill you offensively.
I'd be surprised if he is anything more than a 25 point scorer on average.
Edit: This doesn't mean he can't be a very good defensive defenseman. It's just difficult to set the bar really high when a guy hasn't displayed much offensive ability. |

I personally can't dispute any of that, I'm just wondering what made Morin a 1st round pick, and Hagg a 2nd round pick?

Well if i remember correctly, Morin was very much a late riser. All it takes is one team to fall in love with you to from from 25-30 rated (it's where i think Morin was ranked among the NA skaters) to go in the early part of the 1st round, like Morin did. Meanwhile Hagg was ranked 8th among international skaters.
So if i had to guess, i'd say his size, the fact that he's a pretty good skater for a man of his size, and strength?
I was all about Pulock's missile of a shot or Zadorov seeing as he was about the same size as Morin but showing better offensive upside in that spot (hoping someway some how Rasmus would fall).
But im not an expert, and the Flyers just liked Morin more. We'll find out in some years which was the right choice. |

Morin was a late riser. Not many had him in the first round at the mid season rankings and even late in the year, several had him as no better than a late 1st rounder.
The draft is a crap shoot. That's why guys like Hugh Jessiman, Bobby Sanguinetti and Mark Fistric get drafted before guys like Mike Richards, Claude Giroux and Mike Green. |

We will find out, something made the Flyers think that highly of him. And wasn't there rumors of Montreal wanting to grab him up, or was that another player?

Aside from his height...his self confidence and mean streak are appealing. |

I don't know either. All I know is he looked good and showed a lot of potential in the pre season. |
