Stone isn't the fastest skater but in tight he is as good a skater as we have at forward, his ability to create space for himself when he is on top of people and get his man turning around are the best on the team at forward, not fast but his shinny instincts are the best on the team.

Who needs speed when you always know where the puck is going?

A+ for Mark Stone - IMO he is an elite forward. The Canadian Alfie

30 goals / 70 points low ball target? eeeesh thats a bit of stretch imo

If he can follow this season up with a 60-65 point season I would be more then happy.

I remember last summer going to the dev camp and Stone was easily the best player on the ice and I think he has made huge improvements in foot speed and should continue to get better.

He was a great sleeper pick in my draft. I think I may have taken him with my last or second last pick. Literally had to search for his name in order to find him haha

Great season all around but I think the Calder goes to Ekblad

Hard to argue about Ekblad, but keep in mind, not on a playoff team. Tends to turn off the voters a bit...

Side note: Tobias Lindberg had a really strong year with Oshawa. Nick Paul same as well with North Bay. Both in top 20 in OHL playoff scoring.

Both big wingers that can score and likely in Bingo next year.

Arguably the only potential good thing to come from the Bishop trade.

An improvement of 4 goals and 6 points is a stretch?

Stone's TOI/G was less than 10.5 minutes at even strength under MacLean (25 games), and after that it was almost 13.5 after Cameron took over.

Give him that extra 3 minutes per game playing with offensive players over the first 25 games, and he would have been very close to 30-70 this season. Now with a season under his belt, you would be happy with a regression?

I am not sure if that matters so much for the Calder vote though. Other trophies it might play a part for sure, but the rookie I don't know how much of a factor it is.

If it was a regression from 60+ points to say 51-52 I might be a bit dissapointed but if he finished anywhere between 60-65 I would be happy.

I think its just more about the "low ball" term. Not too many 70 point players now adays with less then 100 GP.

Mark Stone = Aflie 2.0

Many similarities - both very smart hockey players, see the ice well, great passers, great defensively, very competitive, both are clutch. Alfie was better at skating and carrying the puck. Stone has the ability to find open ice near the net.

Hopefully, Stone can keep improving and be one of the all time great Sens. Hell, I'd be extremely happy if he can keep repeating his performance from the past year for years to come.

Will he match Alfie's career stats? Probably won't come close but this past year showed that he has the skillset to be a great player.

if he is going to match Alfies stats he's going to have to have some true offensively pure linemates so he can have a few 80-90 point season - it can be done, just need to find the right players

Here's the break down of the forward slotting (by age):

Milan Michalek - David Legwand - Chris Neil (30/34/35)
Clarke MacArthur - Mike Hoffman - Bobby Ryan (30/25/28)
Colin Greening - Zack Smith - Eric Condra (29/28/27)
Mika Zibanejad - Kyle Turris - Alex Chiasson (22/25/24)
Matt Puempel - JG Pageau - Mark Stone (22/22/22)
Nick Paul - Curtis Lazar - Tobias Lindberg (20/20/19.5)

It's clear that the best is yet to come. Mike Hoffman should actually fall to where Turris is. The 3rd line there will likely all be gone. The prospects in the latter 3 lines should be packaged for a top line player

I find it interesting that everyone is focusing on Stone. Don't get me wrong I was impressed by Stone but I was equally impressed by Hoffman.

I think together they make a great 1-2 punch like Ottawa's version of Toews and Kane.

Hoffman is amazing as well, but stone's ability to read the play, his hockey IQ and his defense awareness is overall better than Hoffman. That makes him a better player IMO. I think Hoffman is more of a pure goal scorer which is also something the team needs. Future looking bright for the Sens!

not at all actually, I am serious. they are clearly not on the same level and Toews and Kane. but one is a natural leader who reads the play and is a great setup guy and the other is a fast skilled natural goal scorer just like Toews and Kane
