that was a lot of writing for something that you could have simply expressed with a single picture (it is the equivalent to 1000 words)
good blog though |

Overpaid Underachiever? Sounds like Legwand to me.
Good blog though, Greening's extension really was a mistake from Day 1 and I hated it as soon as it was announced. Seemed like a waste for someone who still had an extra year on his contract. |

legwand or michalek - sensarmy_11
If Michalek can come back to a similar level of production that he had in the second half.. eh I still like him |

I think everyone thought when he signed it was "oh ok ... 2.65M over 3 years....hey, wait a minute"
Ya 2.65 a year is a complete waste. Do I feel sorry for him? Considering the fact that the average Canadian doesn't make that in their entire lifetime put together - not really |

yeah, the guy has essentially made almost 9 million dollars to attend hockey practice......... |

He's going to be bundled into a trade for a salary dump:
Ott: E. Stall
Car: Ott 1st, Chiasson, Greening or Legwand |

A guy that has a cup ring; Olympic gold, hit 100 points; hit 40 goals twice; 30 goals 6 times*; who doesn't know what hitting less than 55 points is in a full season - THAT guy is a guy you trade for a mid 1st round pick, a projected top 9 in chiasson, and bad contracts? (17 has SOME value - at deadline for a pick) |

i think staal is making 10mil in actual salary this year.....NO WAY melnyk is taking on that deal, unless the canes take back equal money (so neil, phillips, greening and chiasson, plus the 1st) and we know that's not happening.
add to that, the fact that having his 8.5 (or whatever) cap hit means we wouldn't be able to re-sign all our RFA's.
no thanks. |

I think Ottawa needs to add a few more spare parts to make it a fair trade. Maybe a handful of 5th round picks? Yeah, that should do it...

I think his Cap hit makes him almost untradeable - what team can fit in $8.5 million into their Cap for a free agent?
But a 1st round pick and Chiasson is not a bad return, eseentially what we got for Spezza |

Tuna99 - I personally really dislike how people dismiss others' trade proposals - so I like your train of thought.
I just think people forget that E. Staal is a star player in this league on a BAD team. His cap hit is only an issue THIS year. Then he can take a longer, more cap friendly deal. He was also a top scorer 2 seasons ago. He's been just alright the last 2 years but the team has been terrible.
Carolina's going to try and trade semin - do you take him if they eat half the salary and give them a michalek or something (in a bigger package) lots of options |

Staal is as washed up as Spezza, and maybe even Lecavalier to an extent. You don't trade away 1st rounders and prospects for washed up stars. |

i wouldn't touch semin....even if they took 80% of his contract (which they won't). honestly, other than dipietro, that is probably the worst contract in NHL history. |

ya that's true. but the point with semin is that atleast he can score (when he wants) which he doesn't at this point. 30 gms would rather have michalek. Even greening would be better. But the team has to make some roster spots free and Hammond is one person you want to do it for.
I still think a package with Cowen/Lehner and a forward will get you good return. Like a Hoffman, Cowen, Lehner/Anderson for Hertl and a Dman. |

The Hoffman trade talk has to stop, what GM in there right mind is going to trade a Rookie who just had 27 goals, not in this world, in fact I wouldnt even trade him straight up for Eberle and his 6 million dollar cap hit. We would be crazy to trade our first round pick in such a deep draft especially with Murrays drafting record. The only way a trade goes down is if Hammond signs, we then package Lehner a 2nd round pick and Michalek for a proven top 6 forward. Don't count on getting anything for Legwand or smith just getting rid of them for future considerations would be a bonus. There is a reason Derek grant was dressed last game, we can unload Smith and put Grant on fourth line who is cheaper and I am sure he will put up way better numbers then that plug Smith who couldnt hit the net if his life depended on it. Lots of dead weight on this team that we need to dump and expect nothing in return. We got some rookies that will step up next year for sure. Someone is gonna over pay for Hammond so I wouldnt expect any trades going down. |

1) Hoffman: I see what your saying and your point is valid -- how can you think of trading a rookie that lead your team with 27 goals. But, his overall game needs a lot of work AND there's always a high chance here that he'll regress. That said almost all his goals were 5 and 5 and he was consistent all year.
2) Eberle: He was one of the best forwards in the 2nd half in scoring. I wouldn't think twice about trading 1 for 1.
3) Dead weight: ya. Legwand, Phillips, Neil, Smith, GREENING!, and even Michalek could all be off the team without effecting it. It's about 16M! in cap space they take up |

Eberle is a great forward also but its not like any of those guys in Edmonton play both ends of the ice either. Hoffman will get locked in with a contract like Turris and he knows Cameron wants him playing 200 feet. He dominates every league he has ever played in I truly see him getting 20-30 goals over the next few years. But when it comes to trade talk I don't see much coming our way because every GM is trying to fleece each other these days. Peumple and Prince are ready to make some noise. |

I agree Hoffman is awesome and all the way back to midget he has always had a brake out year his second year on a new team.
I could see him being a 30+ goal scorer quite a few times. Him Stone and Silferberg would have been nuts on a line together.
I think Edmonton's crazy prices on their stars has to come down and now that they have CM it's gotta come down a little otherwise they will never be able to get a decent goalie or D
As far as trading goes I do hope Ottawa can make a few moves in the off season but I doubt Murray will do anything other then sign the RFA and UFA's he wants and maybe some free agents that might come along... only way a big trade gets done is if they call him. (which reportedly Hammond signing talks have started but should really get going after the worlds. and Teams are already calling about Andy and Lehner) |

hahahaha I like this comment.
but in all seriousness Green is a big guy who has talent. That has never been his issue. and in his first year or two he showed signs of being a solid player. I think what happened was he got that contract that was based off hope that he would develop and in his head (not on purpose) he thought "well i'm safe for a few years. I've made it" and he stopped working and stopped developing.
Personally I don't blame him at all, it happens all the time to athletes, Management should have given him a smaller maybe 1-2 contract and said "prove it then we will give you more next time" |
