This trade is mind boggling from a Canucks point of view. From a Pens point of view, it is a straight win.

Signing Fehr, who is equal to Sutter for 1.3 million less a year makes Bonino basically come in for league minimum.

Bonino seemed to be misused by the Canucks. The ducks knew how to use him in a lesser 3rd/4th line center role. Was he really a 2nd line C for the Nucks? if so, STUPID.

He thrived playing a 3rd/4th line role and managed to be 3rd in scoring on the team doing so with the ducks. For whatever reason, people thought that meant he was ready for 2nd line C.

On the pens, he is certain to be 3rd/4th line C again and he should be back to his ducks self.

And the Nucks traded down the pick too + gave up Clendening, who is a pretty decent prospect.........lol.

I'm laughing uncontrollable. Canucks fans must be inconsolable at this point.

Glad to see Vancouver get fleeced

In regard to Clendening...he is a 5'11" puck moving Offensive Dman that can make a great first pass and can really shoot the puck....BUT he has slow feet and has trouble in his own zone given his size/skating ability. Hawks gave him 2 games and shipped him to vancouver for a 19year old Swedish dman. Clendening lit up the AHL but seems to be no more than a puck-moving 6th dman in the NHL.

Jim Benning is arguably the worst negotiator out of every GM in the NHL.

Good let him tear it up in ahl. I'd love for the baby pens to win the calder cup and if he can help them and be used as a call up if injuries happen the cool by me

Not that big of a deal. Team is only marginally better. Just my two cents.

He can't shoot at all..

15 points in 49 games is lighting up the AHL in your opinion?

I believe with this roster and the success that SHOULD come, HCMJ will earn himself a nice healthy extension.

I know next to nothing about Clendening, but I'm curious how a defenseman can score 59 points in the AHL, and not be able to shoot or skate well. Something doesn't jive there...

Very pleased the GM and staff are finally figuring it out! The Team needed to upgrade given the division of NY, NY I , WASH, CLM, even Philthy.... They were all getting better and the Pens were spinning their wheels.

They are not star level players, but that isn't the point. As RW says, these are depth players, and the Pens front office has finally bought in on using the proper analytics to find and acquire the proper depth players! Can't wait to see the fruits of this work

Soooo Bonino has almost-as-good traditional stats, decent bit better possession stats, and is less than 2/3 the price.

Plus the upgrade in draft pick, plus the prospect.

Holy smokes, this is almost Goligoski for Neal and Nisky territory.

Talked to my Hawks friends. They say the reason he was moved was because the Hawks wanted to set the development clock back because Clendening was NHL ready but fell behind TVR, Runblad, and Johns in the depth chart. Traded him away for an equal prospect who was a few more years away. Not saying he's great since he did fall behind so many other prospects in his system but he's definitely not a bust yet.

I think I'm officially team trade Kunitz. With all this forward depth, we can use Franson in a top 4 role much more than Kuntz in a middle 6 role. If we could get rid of Scuderi and sign Franson with those savings, that would be ideal, but I just don't see that happening. Kunitz would probably likely need to be moved next offseason to make room for Maatta, Plotnikov, and possibly Perron and Bennett extensions depending on how each perform this year. I'd hate seeing The Kun go from a sentimental standpoint, but it might be what's best for this team at this juncture

I'm not sure this is such a good thing for the Pens blog here on Hockeybuzz

With Sutter gone, after a surge of replies from the trade post, I expect a sharp drop in replies to future blog posts.

Well...maybe not...can Scuderi, wearing the bullseye all by himself now, sustain the conversation?

Clendening has scored much more (123 points in AHL = 23G 100A).

Pens added two above average 3Cs for effectively the price of one average at best 3C. It's a good deal.
- jfkst1

It's a good trade, but only marginally improves the team. That's my point. I didn't say the pens got fleeced, I said they aren't leaps and bounds better. Do you guys take everything out of context?
