It's tough to realize how serious a concussion can be unless you have one. Brutal. |

Bob Duff: Franzen taking radical approach to concussion recovery process
Detroit forward Johan Franzen is pushing his body to the limit to see what he can endure before his post-concussion symptoms return prior to the start of training camp later this month. - BobDuff
Yeah, good for Franzen.
Best to ignore medical advice. It's only your brain, right?
I'd rather have a guy prove his machismo by working as hard as he can - obviously those concussion sucks like Pronger were wimps.
Great article, Bob. We need more people to support those who ignore medical advice when it comes to brain injury.
Weird question, but is Junior Seau still on the Chargers?

I always liked franzen. Big, tough, will always remember him being parked in front of the net. But at 35, already has a ring, what's left to prove? His symptoms sound horrible. What if he gets rocked again and they don't go away next time? Sometimes players have to step away from the game when they don't want to. I hope he makes the right decision for himself, and his family |

as far as ignoring medical advice... well none of us are the Mule, so only he really knows how he feels, Doctor's included.
It would say it is wiser to listen to them and follow their steps, but I appreciate his sentiments because I get the logic.
Either way,
Im hoping the Mule can come back and play in the dirty areas. Not much time for the Mule left in all reality due to his age and his game style.
all the best Mule. |

give all the credit for the Mule for all his hard work, but as others said concussions are no joke and symptoms seems pretty bad. Hope it works out for the best and I hope he doesn't take a puck to the face such as Pronger |

Sarcasm aside, dude has a point.
There's a fine line between heroism and foolishness; I think a millionaire risking repeated serious brain injury in order to play a game is a solid step across that line. |

Thank you, Cleansie.
More importantly, I think it is irresponsible of bloggers to praise a guy for ignoring medical advice and the NHL's concussion protocols.
This player is exerting himself until the concussion symptoms return.
That's just stupid.

Um... and exactly where does Bob "praise" Franzen for ignoring medical advice ? Your statement is complete ignorant B.S. This was a neutral and objective status report on one of the Wings star players. Try to read the article with some objectivity. Bob is an excellent blogger on the this site. |

As much poop as us red wings fans have thrown at Franzen (myself included) I really think hes been suffering for a while. It seems like I can count 5 shots to his head, and theyve been dirty. Dirty shady illegal hits which havent really been noticed by the disciplinary arm of the NHL.
I really hope he can play, it means hes healthy and a healthy Franzen is pretty good. |

Its his own life.
If he wants to play, the guy has been a beast, let him play. |

Sure was nice of Holland to get this done on a holiday weekend when most of us Red Wings fans were already planning to spend the next few days in a drunken stupor anyway. |

best part, you can't put that contract in the the minors without a cap penalty of 50k. |

False. $950k is exactly the bury-able amount in 2015-16. The calculation is (league minimum salary + $375k), and league minimum increases to $575k this year.
Now if you want to talk about the $750k or so in overage penalties slagged onto this year's cap due to Cleary laughably making his "performance bonus" last season ... |

Anyway, re-signing Cleary drives me nuts. I don't care if the full salary hit can be buried in the minors. There's no spot for him.
I already kvetched about this on the last thread, but there are, bare minimum, 22 forwards the Red Wings have under contract that I'd rather see on the ice for Detroit than Dan Cleary. He serves no useful purpose.
(1) He's not good enough to play a regular shift in the NHL anymore.
(2) The the fourth liner / spare forward / temporary call-up plug position is already a crowded field, with Drew Miller, Joakim Andersson, Luke Glendening, Landon Ferraro, Mitch Callahan, and even Andy Miele, Eric Tangradi, or Tomas Nosek being equivalent or better options. Probably at least two of those guys will needed to be waived or moved even without Cleary's useless presence on the 50-man roster.
(3) Even if the Red Wings undergo a injurypocalypse and have to dig deep into the GR bench to fill lineup spots, I would still much rather see Larkin, Mantha, Athanasiou, or somebody with, you know, an actual future in the organization get a shot, rather than watch broken-down Dan Cleary continue to fail. |
