Bill Meltzer: Wrapup: Flyers Ground Jets, 3-0 - bmeltzer
In my opinion Brayden Schenn has been our best forward in terms of putting in a solid effort but placing this kid in three different forward spots with different line mates isn't doing anything for him. The Flyers have to find him a home. The top line is going nowhere right now. I'd be leaning on Schenn hard during a contract season. If I'm Hakstol, Schenn would be playing with G and Jake to jump start the offense. |

I wondered what happened to Del Zotto. They way he was helped off the ice it didn't look good, but I guess it wasn't nearly as bad as it seemed. |

Best effort in weeks....solid 60 minutes.....I questioned a week or so ago about how this team doesn't seem to have full 60 minute efforts.....last night they did...when you get caught in your own end you have to keep your feet moving and outwork your apponent....last night they did this and beat a pretty good team. I still would rather more toughness in place of some of the bland forward group, but that's just a personal opinion. Nice building block game. |

The effort and execution were better, but they still needed a great game from Neuvirth to get a W.
The Flyers still struggled at ES, and benefitted greatly from the Jets struggling with discipline as well.
That said the PP looked good, Couturier had an especially strong game and the continued brilliance of Neuvirth has been great to see. Hopefully they can build off it and have a good run here in November. |

They have tried the Schenn, Giroux and Vorecek line a few times, but have never really just let it develop. Anything is worth a try for this team at even strength. |

The performances since cooter came back have been better. We're relying too much on the goaltending but the effort is better. Really needed that win. |

At least they seemed to play with some focus and intensity last night, that alone is a step in the right direction. |

Del Zotto said after the game that he couldn't feel his lower leg for a few moments, but then the feeling returned and he felt fine. Hopefully it was just a stinger and there are no lingering effects.

Yup, no doubt. Outside of the obvious, which was the play of Neuvirth, I was happy to see the following:
The pp waking up and scoring twice. If Schenn can get that shot off consistently, the way Hartnell used to, their powerplay can and should be lethal.
The PK. They were up on their skates and blocking shots. Amazing how much better the PK looks when Couturier is in the lineup.
They gave a solid 60 minute effort
Although he still hasn't scored, Voracek seemed to be pressing less than the last few games and it paid off on the 2nd pp goal.
Things that still need to improve or change:
I've had my fill of Manning, hopefully Medvedev can get healthy and replace him soon.
The overall play at ES needs to improve, however, until they upgrade the talent on D and add more speed and skill throughout the lineup, I'm not sure it can improve much.
They also need to get a bigger and stronger as they seemed to get pushed around a lot and still lose a lot of puck battles in the corners and along the wall.
Mason needs to get back to the way he played last season, Neuvirth has done an outstanding job so far, but he is not going to keep up a .945 sv% pace for very long. |

I hate being a one line team but Giroux and Schenn are the only forwards creating offense. I think we have to push the hot hands. Schenn was tried on the top line after Raffl's faint spell but no disrespect to Raffl but I thought the line looked much improved with Raffl off and Schenn on. |

Neivirth without question has been our best player. What interests me is how even Giroux at his worst can still carry a line. Also watching the Schenns being on the outside looking in, I think they've both been in our small group of best players so far this season. |

I have no concerns with Mason. He hasn't played poorly, just hasn't been as good as last year & previous seasons with the Flyers. Nuevirth has just been lights out. I'd ride the hot hand and be comfortable that Mase will be back to his usual levels soon.
Manning has been mostly awful. He's been ok in some areas, but dreadful in others. He's been mistake prone and battled consistency issues even in the areas he's been adequate in. |

Brayden has had a strong season thus far. Luke has been among the best D, but that might be a case of being the tallest midget-in other words, he's played well compared to the rest of the Flyers D |

I agree with you about Mason, I'm not really worried either. Manning is what he is, a minor leaguer/journeyman. He's doing the best he can, but he's no more than a 6/7 on a bad team and a minor league depth guy on a good one. They need Medvedev to get healthy and to play well.

I missed the second and third periods. What happened to Raffl that his ice time was so limited?
Both Schenn's looked pretty good last night IMHO.
How is Sam Morin doing w/ the Phantoms? He seems to have vanished from the updates. |

nah. He needs to be the 2c and end this coots being a 2c pipe dream. |

All reports on Morin were that he struggled early with the rest of team but has gotten better. Fans will have to be patient...a year or two down the road the guy could be a 23-25 minute guy that no one will want to play against....big D take time, and God knows the Flyers have that. |

Tell me again that Jake really needs to put the puck in the net.
Our D gets roasted consistently but it is time for Jake to contribute some goals to this horrific offence. #14 does make a huge difference but I want 93 back! |
