How'd that turn out for EDM?
I get the BPA thing but the problem is that it has the ability to not provide balance over the long term. Sure it's all good the draft three 40 goal scorers in a row but if you have no D or goaltending where will you be?
They don't need help now...they need help 3 -5 years from now that has to be the mentality. Provide the balance and the results will come. Our D prospects are better but they are much weaker than our forward prospects looking ahead. We need to start drafting and filling some holes on D...and it needs to happen soon. - LordHumungous
That's not why the Oilers were bad, it's because they were so poorly managed, my opinion. They'd have been much better off if they'd have insulated RNH with some quality veteran centres in front of him. Didn't have to be an All-Star, just a guy like Vermette in Phoenix or someone like that.
Same goes for Hall, who's one of the best LW'ers in the game right now. The issue was the deployment of the the kids they drafted. |

They also made the mistake of thinking that Yakupov was the BPA in the 2012 draft... |

He might have been if they didnt fire the coach who coached him when he lead all rookies in scoring only to bring in that idiot who benched him all year and played him in a third line role and never played him on the PP. He still could be the best player from that draft. Hes 21 years old not 30. |

I've heard rumblings that the owner stuck his nose in there and told them they're drafting Yak, but I don't have any literature to it…so don't ask |

Good read for those of you, like me, who consider the Dale Tallon approach as a good model for the Canucks.

I really liked whats been going on in FLorida. At this point they could almost be considered cup contenders in the East which is kinda funny that they turned it around that quick. I also like that their top 2 centers are 6'3 and 6'6. Have a big mobile D too. Will be tough to beat. |

Oilers were bad for a variety of reasons but I agree drafting BPA with the first overall wasn't the issue. Their drafting outside of the their top ten picks is atrocious as well.

They also didnt have to make the 1st overall pick (one of the many times). Though they needed a lot of everything, the ransom you could ask for the 1st overall could have sped things up IMO while maintaining course |

Yeah, I've heard those as well. I wouldn't be surprised, as Katz is a fool.
It's funny, I remember everyone ripping Brian Burke for saying that he would have taken Morgan Rielly at 1st overall if they had that pick. Well looking back, I don't think he'd be far off (especially considering Edmonton's defence problems). Galchenyuk and Forsberg could make a case as well. |

Five years it took Tallon, not exactly quick but very much unlike the Oilers 10+ year method |

Rielly was an excellent pick by Burke, strangely, he's gonna be awesome for them for years to come. A little jealous, but don't tell Lum. |

Thats why I consider this year so pivotal. The way I see it we are about 3 years in to the rebuild with all the 1st rounders we've had. If we trade our 5 UFAs its like adding a whole other draft. If JB can manage to sign Ziatsev then all of a sudden the rebuild really nearing completion and we could still be competitive with the Sedins which would be nice so they could at least get one more kick at the can. |

agree for the most part but still...not having D or goaltending since 2006 hasn't helped them. Look at the impact Nurse is having already. Fill a few needs on D in a few of those drafts instead of BPA and you have a different story. |

I was about to say the same, although they have had 2 3rds, a 2nd and 1st overall during his tenure so maybe he is following the oilers method.
Other than Trochek (3rd round) he hasn't drafted much out of the first either. He has made some very good trades though......mostly with Gillis |

derp... - LordHumungous
Ya with all of top 10 picks being forwards they should seriously have done nothing but draft D and goalies with every other pick in their last 3 drafts. As mentioned by someone above the Oilers drafting has been just brutal in rounds 2-7.. Not sure if they even have a single player that will be on the team drafted in those positions. |

Rielly was a good pick but I think Galchenyuk is the guy who given 20/20 deserved it. He was coming off a significant knee injury which I think played a large role as well. I don't think Yakapov was a bad pick by Edmonton. |

Never did I say that you take ALL D and goalies all the time but at one point you have to have balance on the club. BPA time and time and time again does not accomplish that long term. |

That's where Tallon being a better manager is key, he's traded for Luongo and added veteran "D" like Mitchell, Brian Campbell and Jovo a few years ago.
The Oilers were deathly afraid of trading anyone to upgrade, they wanted to hand the keys solely to the kids.
I understand what you're saying, I'd love for them to pick an impact dman in the top five, but only if he's rated top five. |
