The reason I did not mention his "likeness" in SLAP SHOT which many think is the Paul Newman character, Chiefs' player/coach "Reggie Dunlop", is because Brophy is not who Dunlop was based on. That was instead long time EHL Johnstown Jets winger Richard Roberge who, with the exception of one season (1956-57) with the WHL New Westminster Royals, played for the Jets from 1954 to 1972 and was that club's player/coach for four seasons (1967-71). Roberge played 1,149 games for Johnstown and including playoffs scored 790 goals and 1,044 assists for 1,834 points for the Jets. Roberge has a cameo in the film as referee "Ecker".

I don't really think the "Nick Brophy" character (played by Jets winger John Gofton) was meant to be patterned after John Brophy who was always intense on the ice and thus would not likely to have ever played drunk. If anybody, Brophy would have been much closer to "Syracuse Bulldog" captain Tim "Dr. Hook" McCracken played by Paul D'Amato who actually texted me last night about my blog which he said he very much enjoyed reading.
