The reason I did not mention his "likeness" in
SLAP SHOT which many think is the
Paul Newman character, Chiefs' player/coach
"Reggie Dunlop", is because Brophy is not who Dunlop was based on. That was instead long time
EHL Johnstown Jets winger
Richard Roberge who, with the exception of one season
(1956-57) with the
WHL New Westminster Royals, played for the Jets from
1954 to
1972 and was that club's
player/coach for four seasons
(1967-71). Roberge played
1,149 games for Johnstown and including playoffs scored
790 goals and
1,044 assists for
1,834 points for the Jets. Roberge has a cameo in the film as referee "Ecker".
