And the market for not only defensemen, but players in general was higher back then. timing overall was just terrible for the Flyers and makes the contract look worse than it is now. I think if Hextall wanted to retain 50% salary he would be gone already though

I suspect he'd be more willing to do so now. - bmeltzer
Agreed. I also 100% agree with you on the savings aspect of a trade. Even 50% retained is more than sending him down to the AHL and is enough for 2 players on ELCs to be on the Flyers. At this point it would look more like 2.5 million gained in cap space instead of 2.5 million in dead money
I think a kick in the balls would be Flyers retaining 50% and then he gets picked in the expansion draft. It would still be worth it, but would be a little salt in the wound

Marcus Johansson and the #caps settled before arbitration, per sources. He gets a three-year, $13.75M deal -- $4.583M AAV.

He seems to have lost a step and just doesn't show much offense. Do you think the Flyers move him or do you think he could be a deadline type move. Myabe he plays a little better to increase value.

I wouldn't care. Just like when VLC has some success in LA. I'll take the $2.5M savings per year and be glad it's gone and wish him and his new team the best (except against us).

There's no guarantee he gets picked with a full 5 million dollar cap hit either

Especially now.
You don't want him in the AHL taking time from your young players now that guys like Sanheim, Morin, Wilcox are all there.
And with the way the defense is now he is more like your 7th dman which is terrible at 5 million.
I would move him, keep 50% and wish him luck on the future
I think the odds of Hextall being willing to retain $2.5m for four years on MacDonald are about the same that Hextall was willing to offer Ryan White two years at $1.5m. Zero, in other words.

exactly right, the young guys need playing time in the AHL, and it would be great to have a slot for Provy in the NHL. either way, think its unanimous that if AMac can be moved at all, you do it.

Well sending him to the minors is only a 900k savings for 4 more years.

MDZ, Streit and Schultz only have one year left on their contracts. Manning is still unsigned. Hakstol used MacDonald more than Schultz and Manning after he was recalled. So I really have no idea why you'd expect MacDonald to be in the minors for four more years.
Hindsight is obviously 20/20. I seem to recall thinking at the time that contract was done⦠Well, that's a surprise. I was uneasy about the amount, but again the market was different then. Who knew that he couldn't play up to that level? If he was performing like he was paid, nobody would be questioning the deal right now.
I think Hexy would be willing to retain money to move him, but possibly not 50%. However, I'd think he'd be happy to retain as much as 1.75 million, and maybe, if not now, but during the season when injuries start to hit, he might find a taker at 3.25 million per, especially if he's willing to swap him for next to nothing.
I cant see andy mac getting taken in any expansion draft unless he really plays well. There will be better and cheaper options available imo.
they need to forget how much he makes as it is a sunk cost. Put him in a position to succeed and go from there. if that is the bottom pair then so be it.

A trade for a surplus forward with a smaller contract seems more likely to me, e.g. Moulson.
