Thanks Carol! Enjoy the sunshine this weekend!
Nice to see Etem stayed the whole summer. I am hoping for big things from him as my underdog to root for |

The #Canucks showed marginal interest in free agent Lauri Korpikoski, kicked tires with his agent.

Whats the point? He would just end up on the Leafs by Christmas anyways |

As long as it was Columbus's 2nd round pick and not ours...that would be prudent asset management |

I can see sam gagner getting signed here IF we intend on moving someone out, both for the log jammed roster spot and the cap space. Capfriendly lists canucks as having 2.7M space....wasnt gagner earning 4.5-5M last contract?
Personally I think Id rather have a banging winger that can score a la 2011 torres.
not sure who thatd be these days thats still available |

I don't usually venture into EK's threads, but the link to Bobby Ryan's article in the Player's Tribune is a good read. |

In response to SM Dragon and, in general, just some food for thought:
I would have loved to see a guy like Abdelkader signing with the Canucks - as someone on this board pointed out a little while ago, he's a very similar player to Hansen, in that he is an excellent utility player who can also chip in offense (mind you, recently he's had quality line mates and good ice-time, including some on the power-play - somewhat similar to Hansen's trajectory). The difference of course is that Abdelkader just signed for 7 years at roughly $4.5 per year, which is, to put it bluntly, squarely in the domain of the insane (the contract will run out when he's 36).
Although he's a player than can play up and down the line-up, the cost of retaining him is of course bordering on criminal, and you have to think surely Abdelkader has compromising photos of Holland molesting a yak in a tutu (Holland and not the yak) :shakeshead:
Nonetheless it puts things in perspective. So, for those of you that think Hansen's isn't a phenomenal deal, you now have an excellent example of managerial insanity at its finest (but one that seems to be more and more the prevailing philosophy). Both players are of similar age and skill-set and yet their respective cap hits are worlds apart. It just demonstrates how valuable these types of utility players are fetching these days and it wouldn't be surprising to see Hansen's next contract include a hefty raise. The type of quality in this type of player is the highest its ever been, and its an asset that any team would covet. Demand for this type of player has never been higher
Hence, the question remains, do we sell high or do we stand pat and make the most of this asset going forward? (or is there another Hansen/Abdelkader out there at a more cap friendly price?) Anyway, just something to consider for all the arm chair managers (myself included) out there. |

I have seen a few times on here the comments There are no Shortcuts. I am not debating against any one person in particular because it has been said by a sizeable number of posters on here.
That statement is wrong. There are many many shortcuts and the more you find the better. To a point.
Example we could wait until 2012 first round Brendan Gaunce develops into a top 9 left winger or we can upgrade and trade for 2011 first round pick sven Baertschi.
We could wait and see if Cody Hodgson first round pick would turn into a top 3 Center or we could trade for a top three Brandon Sutter.
We could hope one day McNally turns into a useful NHLer or we could trade for Gudbranson .
Any time you can upgrade and not give up the farm a GM should do it.
Not every draft pick will work out. Not every trade will work out. The teams that are usually successful most time have a GM that wheels n Deals.
So yes there are shortcuts otherwise our roster would still have McNally Jennings Hodgson Grabner and Schroeder, and I don't see that as a cup winning lineup |
