im not sure we should be looking for one this off season. Having said that, of the names available methot should be somewhere near the bottom. He owes EK half his salary, and thats generous. |

Methot wouldn't be horrible, I'd still rather try for Vlasic or Elkholm. Just a thought, what if GMJB works some of his Pittsburgh cap magic and is able to find a way to be able to send Bogosian to Rochester for half the season to finally get him some development as a defenseman, the guy can skate and has a cannon for a shot, but he has never been taught how to play defense. He could be the diamond in the rough we are looking for and it would then make his contract more livable for the next 3 years. |

You think Methot would be that bad if used as a 4-5 guy and PK? I was surprised that he looked solid in Game 7, hadn't really paid attention to him for a while, but always thought of him as meh when he played for Columbus. Is it all EK or does he have viable skills for a lesser role here? |

The question at hand isnt a 4-5 guy its as a partner for risto. His style of d-man is archaic |

He was fantastic in the playoffs.
The concern with that is that he was fantastic at shutting people down when the refs were letting everything go.

I hear ya, was just wondering if you thought that he was so bad he couldn't handle even a lesser role with another club. Sounds like you don't think he can from the "archaic" label.
I want a shutdown defender so am glad MP wrote about him, especially after he played well for Ottawa in the playoffs...just interesting to hear the counters to that idea. |

Similar to how Muzzin got a ton of credit from people for his role in their last cup run in LA, but I honestly thought he was shaky and scared half the time, Doughty was covering his ass. |

I would hate to see Methot go but he could do for Risto what he does for EK. His cap hit is reasonable, he can jump into the play and is an excellent defensive defenseman. He would be an upgrade on your blue line. The only reason this is possible for the sens is because Cleasson looks like he can fill that role for us going forward with a little more offense.
Both are not prototypical top pairing defenders but when EK is your wingman that reduces the need to have an elite man on the other side. Risto is damn good and I think Methot would be an ideal partner for him.
I imagine a 3rd and maybe a B prospect would get it done if buffalo was serious. If they out wait any other bidders a 2nd alone may do it. If Methot it exposed, Las Vegas is grabbing him. You can be damn sure of that.

shut down defenders have evolved into something else entirely. It works in ottawa because EK can handle obscene minutes and moves the needle like nobodies business. Even if you consider risto top pairing material, hes obviously shown he cant carry his partner which doesnt bode well for someone like methot. The fact that Karlsson did everything offensively by himself makes it easier on Methot to focus on blocking shots and all that 1999 crap. He wont get away with that here. |

Bingo, a team with one of the worst PK's can ill afford to take that risk. |

Makes sense, I saw those figures about Karlsson and the Sens when he's on the ice vs off and they are literally a different team from one to the other. Thought he looked solid, but again only watched Game 7. I think Risto is top pairing material if given a stay at home partner, but you're right Risto is nowhere near Karlsson so Methot would be tested a lot more often and perhaps to his breaking point.
Good points. |
