With Wingels, Bouma, Hayden, Hino, Flipper, Mr. Meow, etc, Q is going to have a lot of options.
I still want to see if Wingels can revert to his prior form a bit, but that may be wishful thinking. He seems to have worked his way down the lineup. |

I think Vinnie's going to be a third liner at some point. He is clearly not cut out for a banging fourth line role, but third line is expected to provide a bit more offense and typically can avoid the heavy D boys so matchups will be a bit better. His speed is absolutely electric and his effort is without question so as JJ said he'll play in the NHL. I think he's more than just a bottom guy, but still am not sold he can be Top 6. He got manhandled pretty good last year more times than not. I feel for the kid and personally empathize with a kid with immense talent who just happens to be tiny (my own son is exceedingly small and he too loses those board battles quite often) so I am 100% rooting for this kid. |

Agreed on the post above (quotes not working). There is big time job competition for jobs on the bottom 6.
Personally, I have some doubts that ADB is going to make the team out of camp. But, if he does, then add Patrick Sharp and Ryan Hartman to the mix on the bottom six, not to mention either AA or Schmaltz.
And guys like Wingels, Bouma, possibly Dauphin, and even Tootoo will probably make the team because of the roles they fill.
Tootoo I believe is skating tonight and he is skating tonight in case some knucklehead Detroit prospect wants to run someone. Like it or not, accept it or not (not pointing you out, but a lot of people refuse to accept it), that is Tootoo's job on this team.

One other Skille comparable, he still really struggles to execute on the breakout. He and Motte and Schmaltz were a (frank)ing trainwreck getting out of their end last year, and I saw some of that the other night with Vinnie in Columbus.
I suspect that also is adjusting to the demands of the NHL game versus being a "scorer" at the lower levels. |

I wasn't paying attention to that honestly, but Vinnie is a forward who really needs to get low on the breakouts so as to avoid the pinching D-man. I don't mind a bigger winger being higher in the zone, he can protect and fight for the puck better, but a smaller winger probably needs to get lower and move his feet (or the puck) really fast to get a breakout going. With that in place you can take the first pass if that's where the breakout goes. If you have a good first pass and proper alignment a breakout in the very least should get you into the neutral zone. From there you hope for an O-Z transition. Next time Hino plays I'll watch him on the breakout. |

Will be interesting to see where Schmaltz and AA lineup at the start. If Schmaltz is 2C, then I hope they put Sharpie up there so he has two vets to guide him. Plus Sharp is great at the dot should Schmaltz get tossed |

That's a real veteran line-up.
Kampf has had an impressive rookie camp and regular camp. He's making a strong case to be on the opening night roster. The same can be said for Dauphin and Hayden.
However, I won't be too worried if any of these guys start the season in Rockford. I imagine there will be several call-up throughout the year and at that point we'll see who sticks. |

Schmaltz at 2C and Anisimov at 3C helps create better balance in the top 9. I think the real question is who will be the 2LW and 3LW. Sharp will have one of those positions, but I think the other is wide open. |

Kris Draper is the best 4th line center I have ever seen.
Darren Helm was the best 3rd line center in the NHL for many years.
If he can be one of those, then that makes Chicago a better team. |

I'd expect Jurco/Wingels to shuffle in at 3LW. Jurco, if he's going to play, is probably better suited for 3LW than 4LW but we'll see |

John,
Very good insights in this blog. Frankly, this analysis can apply to nearly every Hawk prospect in the mix.
None of these guys have top six F/top 4 D pedigree. They are all depth role players at best. Which is fine. As long as the players themselves accept it, and fans can temper their expectations about what is reasonable in terms of upside on these players.
I still have doubts about guys like Schmaltz and ADB. Schmaltz still feels too much like a TT kind of guy - which in and of itself is not bad IF he is paired with the right linemates. Same seems true for ADB, in addition to seeing how he fares against men and not boys.
This is a stretch to determine who fills out the bottom six and the lower three D positions. I just shudder to think that there is any seriousness to a second line with ADB and Schmaltz joining Kane....
Keep up the good work. |

Jagr will sign with his hometown Czech league team to remain available at the mid-season TDL. I don't think he has had any offers worth his perceived value.
