Reports are that the Eichel camp was looking for $11.5, and the Sabres were willing to let him earn it.

If Eichel has a truly exceptional season, the number could have been higher.

Both sides agreed to $10M.

Up to Jack to earn/exceed expectations.

I think it was more sign the deal now, and not play another year and get the points total, if healthy, to get up to that 11M. Just my thinking though.

The expectation was always around $10 million. Even if he did ask for $11.5, my guess is that the Sabres gave him more in "lockout-proof" bonus money than they wanted to as a concession.

His agent wanted him to wait until after the season. Thought he could get more. Eichel wanted it done now and didn't want to wait to get more.

So it's a bit of the latter, but not entirely. I love Eichel, and at the end of the day I think this deal ends up being a good one, but overall, he hasn't earned that kind of payday quite yet. I don't think there's a question of whether or not he will though, to be quite honest. The answer is yes.
