We give officials discretion in other areas(though it's being taken away bit by bit); why not in offside situations?

It's blatantly obvious that if a player is 2mm offside he's not gaining an unfair advantage, especially when he's leaning back trying to stay onside, or dragging his back foot so as to not go offside.

The spirit of the rule is so that no one gains an unfair advantage. Let the officials decide. That way nothing really changes and you can have a more sensible rule book.

Then maybe onto rule 69. Baby steps.

So Paul, what you are saying is the officials will find the "rule" that suits their agenda? Take last night's Chi/Min game, if you look at rule 83.2, that play should have been called offsides. But they looked at 83.1, and somehow think that a puck knocked over the blue line = possession. If I look at 83.2 and I challenge, I am on the successful side of the challenge. Why should a team be penalized when they do have the correct rule to challenge a play?
