Carol Schram: Rookies in the spotlight as Vancouver Canucks host New Jersey Devils Thanks in large part to their young players, the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils are both off to surprising starts in the 2017-18 season. They'll face off tonight at Rogers Arena.

Hall has caught fire of late tallying nine points, 13 shots, and 16 scoring chances over the last five games. It could be tough for him to stay hot as he'll undoubtedly see a steady dose of Chris Tanev, one of the league's best shutdown defenders. This will be a fun matchup.

Easily top 10 defensively. He just doesn't have a beard and a mean face so it's hard for people to admit.

I think Hall will need to keep his head up tonight, as Gudbranson sure has his number when it comes to open ice hits.

thanks Carol

while i appreciate your enthusiasm and commend you for your rosy outlook, i most respectfully and demurely disagree.

unfortunately, my pessimistic and narrow minded, dour disposition doesn't see this play lasting through the long term. if it doesn't happen before, january and february will kill this team. same as it ever was.

Enjoy your ban ... disagreement fosters discontent, discontent fosters hurt feelings, hurt feelings lead to insults.

Thanks Carol! The pic of Gudbranson is hilarious, that's one hairy dude. I agree Tanev/Hall should be fun, I'm guessing because Hall has so many points against us he hasn't had much success in the past in shutting him down. Two teams wildly overachieving with lots of kids, should be a good game!

TY Carol,

Funny that JB wasn't interested in Butcher? His agent apparently thought the Canucks would have been a great fit.

I'm not going to comment on Stecher's disturbing costume

Alright statboy time to show us your superpowers. What's the numbers say?

When I think 'shutdown' I think total shutdown.

I'm on my phone right now but once I'm on a laptop/computer I'll be happy to post. He plays against top lines and yet allows less shots, scoring chances and goals than most dmen in the league despite playing on a poop team in recent years and not having an elite goalie.

He's also excellent at stopping puck control zone entries, teams either have to dump and chase or lose control trying to enter the zone on his side more often than with most dmen.

Controlled zone entries = more high quality scoring chances

So it's not just corsi

Is that for this season or over say the past three seasons? I will wait for your statistical response.

The reason why I ask, it was just a little while ago I remember a number of posters having Tanev on their trade lists. If your observation is true then why the (frank) would anyone suggest trading him? Statistical response not required.

His timing limiting zone entry(closing gaps, stick position, angle) is impeccable. Robot like consistency and personality, night in and night out the best player on this team.
