Thanks Peng for the blog. Much appreciated.
Being relatively new to hockey back then, I never fully appreciated how special those two players were. I was angry when they left, especially with #9, but Selanne coming back made me forget my previous disappointment. My love/hate feelings for Kariya have turned more towards the former, and I will wear his jersey Sunday for the pre-game ceremony honoring the two.
I think it's time to raise #9 to the rafters to forever link those two incredible players. I look forward to the day when both decide to return to the Ducks in some official capacity. They're great ambassadors of the game. |

Thank you Sheng for taking us on this trip down memory lane. Paul Kariya was a bit before my time as a full-fledged Anaheim Ducks fan. Nevertheless, what he accomplished with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim really laid the framework for hockey here in Orange County. As a prospect, I’m sure it was difficult being drafted to a brand new expansion team. With that being said, how fortunate are we, as Ducks fans, to have such a class-act be the first guy this franchise had the opportunity to rally around? We are very fortunate. To be the first ever draft pick by a franchise, and then to lead that same team to a Stanley Cup Final only 11 years later is a significant accomplishment that’s worthy of a Hockey Hall of Fame induction. Thank you Mr. Kariya!
I’ll be keeping an eye out for a blog about Teemu Selanne! |

Thanks Sheng for the post!
Kariya has always been my favorite Duck and he deserves his spot in the HOF. It was unfortunate that his career was cut short as rumor was he was coming back to Anaheim to finish his career with #8. |

Could you be a little bit more amicable? Really uncalled for to focus on the one negative. Sheesh! |

Not being amicable works for some people. Me, I'm kind of like Peter from the movie Office Space. I learned the truth and just stopped caring. Truth be told, I wouldn't trade my uninvolving life for anything. Keeping it boring, mundane and predictable over here.
The Ducks play the Boston Bruins tomorrow. I always thought this group played well against Boston. When they're winning the neutral zone and staying disciplined they're effectiveness is astronomically higher. I was crunching some numbers a few days ago, and this team is a league worst -19 for penalties. I don't what it is. That's more than 1 less penalty per game. John Ahlers and Brian Hayward like to say, "It always seems to even out." But statistically speaking, that's never the case. It's basically a guarantee it'll be one less for the Ducks. It's just frustrating, because Perry's a zillion times more effective when Anaheim is winning the neutral zone and they're staying out of the box. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Should be a good game! |

You're all welcome! Unfortunately, my focus over the weekend was Kariya, so I didn't get much on Selanne. I hope you guys get a regular blogger soon!
Asian-AMERICAN????? derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr - The-O-G
As an Asian-American myself, I've always considered Canadians under that umbrella -- Asian-North Americans, if you will. But I realize now that many Asian-Canadians draw a distinction, so my mistake.
Anyway, I think we're so lacking in sports heroes of Asian heritage in Western sports that both Asian-Americans and Asian-Canadians hold Kariya in equal esteem. He means a lot to both sides, though indeed, he is Canadian first.

I have mixed feelings about PK. He was my hero as a little kid from about 5 to 14, and the reason I love hockey and the Ducks to this day. But he also went full heel turn when he left. He WAS the Mighty Ducks. It would be like Jeter leaving the Yankees. The pitch was obviously strong to play with Sakic and I'm sure there were other circumstances with ownership in Anaheim (although I think he was already the highest paid player in the game). But he still had the world by the balls here and it came off as pretty silly to leave a team that was just one win away from the Cup for a "better chance". I think Ducks fans mostly went from being angry at Paul to feeling sorry for him when the Ducks were lifting the Cup only a few years later.
He was also never very good to the Ducks fans as I recall. It'll be interesting to see what he says Sunday if he gets on the mic. I don't think he's as revered in Anaheim as Teemu Selanne nor should he be. He didn't love playing for this team like Teemu did.
Obviously I still think he was an amazing hockey player and arguably deserving of the Hall of Fame. He would have been even more deserving if not for the injuries (seeing the Gary Super crosscheck in the mouth still makes me so angry). He would have surpassed 1,000 points easily and probably much more. I'm happy he got in. I also hope 9 remains un-retired in Anaheim until someone comes along and wins a Cup wearing it. |
