"Trading Kane now can fetch Botterill the top pair defenseman and scoring forward his 30th place overall Sabres so desperately have needed this season."

No it can not.

if a cup contending team gives that package up, they no longer will be a cup contending team. Though hey that's none of my business.

I'm sure GMJB offered Murray Samson Reinhart or EKane for Vatanen. Guess it wasn't enough. OEL is still out there though. 😉

Garth, make all your blogs like this and you will slowly start to be taken seriously.

I agree that Kane can fetch you a top 4 D-man but you will have to add to that deal to get it. it all depends on how badly you want that Top 4 D vs a proven 5 on 5 scorer in the prime of his hockey life. Kane has been the only Buffalo Skater in the past 2-1/2 years that has "brought it" every night. I know he has had off ice issues but those seem to have subsided over the past 1-1/2 years. if he stays on pace he will be a mid 70 point guy with 40 goals. That is extremely difficult to replace and extremely valuable. We all ready can not score losing that production is crippling.

I for one would do whatever i could to convince Kane to stay here for maybe ROR money and term... Or if Kane is unwilling to re-sign then trade him and a prospect for your top 4 defense.

Oh and if you somehow manage to resign Kane quick enough, tank the rest of the season in hope that you pick #1 and draft Rasmus Dahlin, bring up Guhle could be a heck of a future top paring..

Kane could fetch a top pairing D-man. It would have to be Kane plus young prospect or roster player plus a pick but it could be done...

kane on his own will not get you a top pairing dman. no team gives up top pairing guys for guys of kanes ilk.

I normally do kick the author, but keeping the blog without wacky, unrealistic trade scenarios gives the rest of the article much much more cred.

He could get us a top pair D. Just not by himself. Unless of course he wasn’t on an expiring contract. Power forwards like Kane are very rare in this game so if he had term left then I think he could get the deal done himself.

I’d rather just trade him for top end futures and hope for Dahlin or Boqvist in the summer. We are about 2-3 years away from doing any type of push for the playoffs.

Not a bad blog for once. The issue with Kane's value is the expiring contract. It lowers his value considerably.

It would be the Dahlin and the Ristolainen pairing.

Dahlin and Guhle are both lefties

That would be a helluva pairing. Still think that the Sabers have a bright future. In GMJB I would trust.

In no world is Kane even with term left on his contract getting you a top pairing D.
