I wish I could find it, but Al Strachan (yeah, I know) had a great article about 15 years ago about how the notion of the league being watered down was a complete myth.
He basically said that due to the rise of US Hockey, and the influx of European players, the talent level has never been higher.
He then made an even more interesting point: the high level of talent is what is killing the game.
Before, you'd have 2-3 good lines, and 1-2 crap lines on every team. The crap lines would make mistakes, leading to scoring chances. Now that the talent level is so high, less mistakes means less scoring chances (keep in mind, this was written before Jake Gardiner).
I miss Strach.
