Todd Cordell: Are the Calgary Flames eying Derek Ryan? - ToddCordellCGY
I don't know man. The only thing he has going for him from our perspective is he's a right hand shot. He's a centre normally.
So far we'll probably start the season Mony, Backs, Janko, Shore down the middle. Ryan's not good enough to ursup Frolik for second line RW. If we buy out Brouwer, then ok, he can play 3rd or 4th line RW. Foo will probably get a shot at 3rd line RW to start the season if he has a good camp tho.
Worth a shot, IF we buy out Brouwer.. |

Problem is what does a soon to be 32 year old want for a contract?
Really like the player, but he's in the same boat as Maroon to me. A guy that hasn't made a lot of money and is looking for a homerun this summer |

He shouldn't get a homerun contract. Ryan spent an awful lot of time this year buoyed by Jeff Skinner.
Half decent player, but if he's getting more than 12 minutes per night, it'll be a problem.

Skinner and his 49 points weren't helping anyone. If anything Ryan helped him
Regardless the guy is going to want a 3 year deal |

I agree bro! Yes he would be an upgrade on the bottom 6 but we have Brouwer & we have some young guys that need spots to compete & get NHL time.
Now I was reading on Flames Nation that buying out Brouwer this week makes more "financial" sense than waiting until next year. The cost for Brouwer over next 2 years if he stays is 9.0 mill. The cost to buy him out this year would be 6.0 mill & if we wait it would be 7.5 mill (4.5 paying him this year to press box & then 2/3rds buyout for next year) So a buyout isnt out of the realm.
I think we need to acquire a top 6 forward that will result in pushing Backlund & Frolik down to the 3rd line & hence, instantly improving the bottom 6 exponentially.
I was floating this scenario on Flames Nation but Im getting trashed for it
Anaheim had asked Perry for a list last TDL. So what if we get Anaheim to flick in a 2nd round pick & Perry for Brouwer? Yup, ugly cap hit, Perry is starting to regress but he is still a great hockey player at 33. Nasty & can score. In a bad year last year (I'm sure Anaheim fans would agree) he still has 17 goals & 49 points in 71 games. He would be tied for 3rd on our team with Tkachuk, more points than Backlund & Ferland.
Then we turn around & flip Brodie to Montreal for Gallagher.
So we get Monahan/Gaudreau/Perry 2nd line Backlund/Tkachuk/Gallagher 3rd line Janko/Bennett/Frolik or Ferland.
Top 9 is infinitely grittier & better.
Ok now trash away |

I don't know that I'd call him great.
I think a team could live with him making 8.5mil this upcoming season, but you better not bank on him after that.
I'd just keep Brouwer. You could bury him in the AHL if need be. Or retain salary on him. No point in taking a longer contract at twice the dollars and longer.
I mean go ahead and do it if you want, but I sure wouldn't be doing that deal. |

I don't understand why they'd target him when they have Shore and Lazar who can play 4th line C. If he's playing any higher than that, it's a problem. |

Because he's Bill Peters' boy.
Coached him for two years in Junior and coached him for 3 in Carolina. |

The other guy had 38, and probably shouldn't have hit 30. |

Personally if we are taking on that much more salary/cap, we’d score a lot more than just a 2nd. I’m not completely opposed to this because we do have cap space. But 3 more years for a quickly declining player could really back fire. IMO salary would need to be retained and we get a good right shot prospect in the deal. - TandA4Flames
Even if cap space is what Anaheim want & wont agree to eat salary, maybe they throw in Ritchie if we throw in Kylington ? I know a lot of Calgary fans hate Perry with a passion but may be the cheapest way to get a top 6 RW for the next few years. You can always buy out the last year if he falls off the map & forgets how to play his game.
Cap going up & we should be fine to carry him for at least the next few years. Quite frankly, I dont see Anaheim wanting to trade him to us in the same division. but they need the cap space. |

Perry is pretty invisible these days.. I say we let the Ducks rot in cap hell now that their window is closing. Fvck the Ducks.
Also, he has an NMC. Doubt he's leaving sunny California to spend the end of his career under a magnifying scope.
Also, no thanks to Derek Ryan. Peters might get him here though.. Sounds like Tre wants to re-tool the bottom 6. |
