Carol Schram: Elias Pettersson scores first NHL goal in first game as Canucks beat Flames Elias Pettersson lived up to his considerable hype on Wednesday, scoring his first NHL goal and assisting on another as the Vancouver Canucks hung on to beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 in their 2018-19 season opener at Rogers Arena.

It was an entertaining game, everyone stepped their game up.

Loved Gudbranson last night, Stecher was flying, Pouliot on a two on one with Pettersson

Markstrom made some outstanding saves, Motte will be my new favourite player.

Now if Boeser and Horvat get rolling this will be a fun team to watch.

Loved the smirk on the bench , I hope he never forgets that moment .

I thought Leipsic 's goal and Goldobin's goal were also very nice and maybe even would have beaten Carey Price and not only Mike Smith.

I am beginning to believe Goldobin can hit the 20 goal mark.

Really liked Gudbrandsons game last night and the game before. It would be fantastic if that trade started being a positive.

Marky finally earned a paycheck.

Goldobin and Pettersson looked like they meshed well together. Add in Dahlen in the future, Demko in net and a top 5 pick (maybe a defenseman) next year. The team could be exciting.

good game by everyone in the lineup especially the PK. LE was on the right side of the puck all night long. The bottom six played like their jobs were on the line. And they should be with guys like Schaller and Roussel waiting in the wings. All in all a good night for the young kids. Saturday night should be a doozy.

Thanks Carol! Great stuff as usual, captured the excitement of what was a great opening night. sh!teating grin is right!

My only concern is: how invisible Boeser was. It’s just one game, so whatever, but I just remembered he was in the lineup kinda invis.

Yeah, the Boeser/Horvat/Baertschi line was the one group that didn't do much.

For now, I'm blaming the weird rhythm of this game. With all the PK time and only one power-play, I don't know if they were able to get into the groove.

Brock was quiet in preseason too, though. Trying not to be worried, but something to monitor...

Thanks Carol, agree on Granlund, he had a good game. Liked how he went hard to the net on the PP trying to stuff in the rebound. Obviously a little more skill to get the puck over the pad on the initial shot would be great, but going to an area where you know that you will likely have to pay a price was great to see. Maybe Brooksey is right, maybe it’s Schaller who will find himself on waivers when Rous is ready to return?

Someone post a future lineup where all of our prospects reach their potential and no one busts

I'd honestly have a new found respect for Benning if he did something like that(assuming Schaller doesn't play decently by the time Roussel is back).

Well why not? This team is in a different situation than when JB was reluctant to cold bloodily move guys out. There are too many players in Utica that can replace invisible performers on the bottom 6 in Vancouver even after Roussel returns.

Canucks for the president's trophy and a first round exit

Just being realistic

Thanks Carol, doesn't Vegas also have live performances from an upper level perch? Going to try and not be so pessimistic about the copycat experience until I've seen it live but...

On the ice, I was a little worried Pettersson might be the target of some payback for Dube but the kid has great awareness

If anything , hopefully EP emerging a bit puts the pressure of that line a little and they can fins their stride here. Also I totally agree the penalties really through everything out of whack until the third.

I think Brock might need some time to get use to that added bulk. Seems a little
uncoordinated with the puck. Like his pipes are in the way.
