Genuinely understands and accepts the suspension, says it looks bad, but there was no intent to hurt him on the play. Says Pettersson is extremely skilled, and just wanted to play him hard all game, not let him drive to the net. Said he has reached out to Pettersson and texted him, asking him if he is ok, and apologized. Pettersson texted back, saying thank you and thanks for reaching out. Hopes he is ok.

Thanks - this is good to hear. As I mentioned in yesterday's blog, Matheson seemed like a good guy when I covered him at the 2016 World Championship.

Still, I feel like he's going to get the full boo-bird treatment when the Panthers come to town in January.

I hope he does get Boo'd. Being remorseful post suspension doesn't negate the entire thing IMO. Still don't like what he did, but I am glad he isn't being defensive about it, and owning up. I also still wouldn't mind any Canuck dropping the gloves with him. Not trying to be barbaric, and generally don't condone premeditated fighting, but I don't think a dirty play on a rookie should end because player safety gets involved.
