How does one extinguish lightning? - jmatchett383

I was expecting a slow start after 10 days away. Wasn't expecting that! I don't blame Vasi. I blame our forwards (centers).
Goal 1: Pacquette was lazy and wasn't back checking. That was his man that was wide open and uncontested for the juicy rebound.
Goal 2: Stamkos didn't tie up Kessel. Just skated by him.
Goal 3: Point had a bad turnover resulting in a backdoor goal.
Goal 4. Letang beat Vasi. Letang has a good shot. Vasi got beat by skill. No shame there.
Have to be responsible in our own end. Thought our defensemen played well. Liked that we came out hitting. Pens converted on our mistakes. Props to them. Get in the video room. Point out the mistakes and get ready for Friday. They know what to do. They just have to do it. |

I agree it was the play in front of him that caused those goals. The team seemed to settle down somewhat as the game went on. I thought by the third after the Stamkos-Malkin fight they played their style of game.
I hate this rotation they are doing I feel its to save face with the veterans, I think its causing issues with the chemistry of the defense as well as the bottom six. I wonder when they will stop it. To me Coburn-Sergachev as bottom pair put Stralman with Hedman and sit Girardi. Coburn has outplayed Girardi. On the bottom six Erne and Joesph should not be out of the lineup, Callahan is a great guy and PKer but slowing down so it will be interesting to see how that goes. |

From what Joe Smith and Bryan Burns have been saying on twitter, the coaching staff would like to go with a permanent 6 defenders. They were going to talk over the break about it but haven't come to a conclusion yet on who the 6 should be. Cooper said yesterday that they might keep doing the rotation because of the high amount of games and back-to-backs that the team has in February.
It is a tough call. I think it's between Coburn and Girardi although I believe we need to be looking at Stralman too. Coburn and Serg have been playing well together. Girardi has been very valuable on the PK. Stralman could be what decides this. McDonagh and Cernak need to stay together, that's 100%. They have been great. Stralman hasn't been good this year at all. He's really regressed in all the analytics and statistics. If he can't prove that he can still handle top line minutes with Hedman, then Girardi gets that spot with Hedman. Stralman then will be back with Sergachev probably to see if they can find the magic that they had last year. Which means Coburn to the bench.
If Stralman continues to struggle though, then we need Girardi for his penalty killing. We need the old Stralman for one last run! |

Girardi threw a thundering hit last night, then a few shifts later he choked on coverage and allowed a goal. Get rid of this guy. Rangers fans tried to warn us.
Pittsburgh will be dangerous until Crosby is 100 years old.

Downside: The 1st period
Upside: Physicality
Take-away: the Xs and Os sucked... but... 1st game after a long break. |

I would bench Girardi before Coburn. Anything Girardi can do on the PK, Coburn can do 99% of without the even strength liability. Sure, Coburn is not exactly ideal, but he has slightly better speed than Girardi and seems less prone to gettting caught flat footed.

I saw a stat someone posted on twitter don't know how accurate but it said with Coburn in the Line Up the Bolts are 21-1-1 in the last 23games he has played. When he is out of the lineup during that time they are 0-4-0. I don't think he is directly the reason for this as I think he more so shapes the lines better and they are more consistent. Girardi out and Coburn on the 3rd pair with Sergachev on the right. |

Lightning win.... there might be something to this... Just a weird stat but Coburn has played great all year and his and Sergachev's metric numbers are great together, the Bolts D pairs play better in tonights configuration.
Great game to watch, chippy, skilled, fast, good goalies. Fun Game. |
