Carol Schram: Canucks lose Alex Edler and injuries mount as road trip continues vs. Caps Alex Edler suffered a gruesome facial injury and the Vancouver Canucks' record on their current road trip dropped to 1-1-0 after a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Michael DiPietro has also been summoned as an emergency backup as the road trip continues on Tuesday in Washington against Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals.

Thanks Carol

Saw this posted. Markstrom and Pettersson keeping the cameras at bay of an injured Edler. I remember Markstrom and Granlund doing the same when Hall KO'd Larsen.

I still think back to Marky shielding Larsen when he was down. That kind of stuff is good to see in those bad situations

That’s a funny quote from Kuznetsov.

Matthews got $11.7 AAV at 5 years with essentially no UFA years being used.

ummmmmmmmmm wasn't this suppose to be a negotiation???

Nylander holds out until he gets what he wants

Mathews gets overpaid without giving up UFA years

Dubas must mean dumbass in Torontonian

I just don't see how this could be considered a negotiation
I have yet to see anything that Matthews gave up in this deal.

at that AAV he should have held firm at going 7 or 8

If it was over 10 AAV then get 8 years

If it is under 10 AAV go shorter term

If Mathews wants a high cap number make him sign longer term

If he wants shorter term give him less AAV

But with all the talk offer sheets dubas probably just gave him whatever he wanted

I think it is a good deal for TO . They get market value for him and did not have to go long term. They can revisit in 5 years. I hope Boeser signs 5 year deal too

It interesting that 2 days ago Mckenzie was reporting on this saying it was going to happen this week and he said if they go the short term route and don't buy UFA years the AAV was going to be between 10 - 10.5 and he was confident in his numbers

The market comparables show it should have been around that.

#Leafs are now the club with the highest combined AAV allocated to their top 2 centers starting next season.

TOR - Matthews/Tavares = $22.634M
EDM - McDavid/Draisaitl = $21.000M
PIT - Crosby/Malkin = $18.200M
LAK - Kopitar/Carter = $15.272M
ANA - Getzlaf/Kesler = $15.125M
VAN - EP/Bo = $6.425M

Tankers get their wish.
1D - gone for a long time likely. No real replacement available.

1Lw - gone for ? No apparent replacement available.

Backup goalie and future star out. No real replacement available, resulting in jr goalie being recalled and Marky carrying the load (which historically is bad news for him).

Teams can't flex on their elite players like they can a mid-tier RFA. Matthews had the leverage to ask for like 14 million a season. He took less security, as a player with an injury history, and less overall cap to bet on himself in the future.

The leafs save 2.5 mil which can be a pretty good player to fill out your roster and have basically the best 1-2 punch at C for 6 seasons now in the middle of a cup window.

Plus a lot of the younger players now have a "(frank) you. give me my money" attitude since teams usually go and spend the savings they used to get on the Lucic's of the world.

Team's aren't going to find it easy to (frank) a guy like MacKinnon over anymore and get them at half their value.

Kapanen won't be cheap. Andreas Johnsson will probably get a pretty decent raise. not really sure how they are going to fit it all in next year.

Those are going to be guys that they'll either trade to improve the D, or you can lean on in negotiations because mid tier RFAs have (frank) all for leverage.

They're both on pace for like 45 points. that's good, but it isn't bank breaking and they'll 2yr deal those guys at like sub 3 money. The only leverage they'd have is an offersheet and GMs are too scared they'll lose a tee time to do that.

The same way Pitts and Chi did.
Keep the core together and flip other pieces for younger and cheaper talents plus picks.

i wouldn't be surprised if they bring up Sandin and Liljegren. They can easily fill in spots by Gardiner and Hainsey, and are both on ELC's. Lots of championship teams are able to utilize kids on ELC's to work within their cap.

List of Canucks that need contracts this summer:

Granlund, Motte, Boeser, Leivo, Goldobin, Edler, Hutton, DP, Demko, Pyatt, Laplante, Schenn, Gaunce, Kero, Boucher, McEneny

Out of all those, I would prefer to see the following resigned all within market value:

Motte, Boeser, Leivo, Goldobin, Edler, Hutton, Demko, McEneny.

ADD in: I would also like to see what the market is for Goldobin and Motte* after they sign, and would love to see whats out there for Gudbranson and Granlund now.
