Have they put a timeline on his recovery? Same shoulder? |

Maatta has a calm and collected way about him. I find he doesn't make a lot mistakes. The times he's stood out negatively are usually when he's beaten in foot speed, even that has been a little less evident to my eyes this year. He will be missed more than some will give credit for.
I think they should look at bringing in someone like Chris Wideman...UFA, 1 mill cap hit and right handed. Probably wouldn't take much to acquire.

Saw someone saw 1-2 months since it was a separation and not a labrum tear. |

Could possibly allow us to pull a Blackhawks with LTIR and maatta returns for the playoffs. |

You nailed the doom and gloom thing.
Yohe said at least a month with a pretty sever separation. Hopeful he doesn't need surgery.
If I'm JR I'd operate like I'm not getting him back. Get somebody serviceable. |

He's definitely been doom and gloom lately, but he's also not wrong. Injuries have been an issue this year as well as roster decisions. JJ will get more minutes and Bjugstad will not play 3C when Malkin is in the lineup.
I'm trying to move into an area of acceptance with this team, but it sucks. |

Want Beaulieu? The sabres have 28 LHDs
He's yours if you return the 4th round pick |

Dmen are always a commodity at the deadline and will require an overpayment. Most of the quality Dmen who are pending UFAs are on contenders.
This is not an easy fix by any means. |

I was thinking about that. Didn't the NHL close that loophole? |

Pretty sure they'd only be able to do that in a new CBA, which there hasnt been one since.

Our only saving grace would be that they want to keep Pettersson with Letang to have Dumo on the second pair.

I'm not hugely concerned wit the 1st. We are in win now, and the chance of a mid to late round first saving us from the end of the Sid and Geno era are next to nothing. |

Dont believe so. Playoffs are unlimited cap, but gotta have the player on your team by the deadline.
The chances for that loophole to exist were quite slim. A long term injury before the deadline, that is not season ending, and that can be returned from at the season's end. And that is for a player with a cap hit big enough to make use of with the bonus cap space. |

As poopty as the injury is, I'd bet any amount of money that Sullivan was going to keep the Finish pairing in tact and put Johnson with Schultz, so I wonder how much this injury is going to impact our performance relative to what it was going to be anyways. Maatta-Riikola isn't a good pairing. |

I would start that way, but after Schultz is up to speed I'd return Dumo to the 1st pairing and drop Pettersson with Schultz.
I'd also let Rikki play the right and let Johnson apply his magic on his strong side. |

The players have to be available. The other issue is roster space when Maatta returns. We all know JJ isn't taking a seat.
Dumo/Letang
New Guy/Schultz
Maatta/Pettersson/JJ
Sadly, I think if any move is made it's for the Pens 1,345,765th depth guy or just think Ruhewedel is enough. |

I was just about to ask same thing. For the most part I like the pairing though there have been some gaffs. Gaffs to be expected though with A: a brand new pairing and B:one of the pairing being a pretty young guy being put into top pairing role.
I like Petts mobility and he seems to gain the offensive zone carrying puck pretty well. He also has a decent shot plus willingness to shoot in the first place. I dont mind him there with Tanger at all. Dumo could help with JJ a bit as well. |

Little tidbit from DKs site... our Dmen's relative corsi this year...
Letang. 7.1
Dumo. 4.9
Petterson. 1.6
Riikola. -2.3
Johnson. -4.9
Maatta. -5.5
Stupid numbers making people believe Johnson > Maatta.
Also damn hats off to Petterson staying above the average while saddled with Johnson. |
