Officials while they were conferring could have easily glanced up at the jumbotron to see that was a hand pass and correct the play on the spot.
Each crew should have a crew chief and should have to be available to the media after the game.
Next year the rule will be like the NFL. Every scoring play is quickly reviewed. |

What about - Just make a stop and the play is irrelevant? You know, like Vegas shouldn't have given up goals! |

There were tons of missed calls on both sides, but none of them resulted in a goal in OT in the WCF.... |

not sure how the missed trip matters here. even if the ref put his arm up to make the call it would have changed absolutely nothing. |

Stewy, congrats again on the US HHOF.
it sounds like you are saying the rule book states this is actually reviewable, but not common practice? can you expand on that? |

What about - don't crosscheck a player out of frustration for losing a faceoff, if you don't want to responsible for the consequences that follow. |

Just like Schenn provided to Meier after his "hand pass"? |

Explained it in the blog. The Rule Book says replay can be used to judge whether it's a "good hockey goal." Rule further states that the examples it subsequently gives are not the ONLY situations where it can be used. But that's not how the rule is used in actual practice. |

For this play, let’s not consider video review at all.
How can 2 linesmen and 2 referees completely miss an obvious hand pass. It involved the puck. Were none of the 4 watching the puck? And this is one of the best officiating crews? They earned the game through merit?
There is no excuse for 4 officials to all completely miss a play. Especially one that involves the puck. |

Pretty sure having more refs/linesmen leads to lazier officiating in a way. Instead of "Oh hey, I should be focused on this part of play." it's like "Eh, there's 3 more of us, one of us will be paying attention, surely."
Then after a play, they all gather like "Hey, I missed it. Did you see it?" "Nah man, me neither, I was sending a Tweet." *3rd zebra skates over* "Hey guys, what's happenin?" |

Calling a trip is at least somewhat of a judgment call. Penalties don't get called every time someone falls the (frank) down in a hockey game and there is an opposing player involved in the play.
Both teams in EVERY (frank)ING PLAYOFF GAME get away with a lot of potential penalties like tripping, hooking, interference etc. To pretend this was only happening against the Sharks and somehow justifies a completely horrible call on a hand pass is just a totally wrong argument. There is no judgment on a hand pass. The play is a hand pass and the play should be dead.
Honestly, not my team and I don't care who wins. If anything I like the Sharks more then the Blues. But that's a horrible outcome to the game on a mistake. |

Another problem is that it increases the chances of a ref's skate deflecting a puck and thus having an influence on the game.
As far as "good hockey goal" reviews go, I am in favor of reviewing all goals in the situation room but giving refs the discretion on whether to hold up the game for the results of the review (although they would obviously have to wait for game deciding OT goals). So if the ref decides not to wait, which would be the most typical case, especially for obviously good goals, then play could resume while the situation room reviews. The situation room would then have a time limit of 90 seconds from the time they receive the video to overrule the goal. If they overrule the goal then they notify the refs and the refs blow the play dead immediately and reset the clock. The refs should also be able to submit audio comments to the situation room people, which should be taken into account during the review. And yes, the people in the situation room doing the reviews should be identified along with the refs and linesmen.
I wouldn't be surprised if the league throw this crew under the bus like it did to the game 7 SJ/LVK crew. |

I like the idea of reviewing all "game ending goals".

I understand the frustration of the Officials missing the hand pass that leads to an OT winner in the WCF, it looks really bad for the NHL as a whole. Compared to the NFL/NBA/MLB the NHL is usually solid with officiating come playoff time, despite what some fans think. Unfortunately, in this instance, each official has their own job on the ice and shouldn’t be “puck focused” like you said, atleast not the referees. That is when calls are missed. The low referee is working to get into position to call a goal. That is that referees primary responsibility, followed by penalties/player safety. In the process of getting in a good position to call a goal he gets screened out by the net/goalie and players to the side of the net. The back official, although I can’t see from the video is on the opposite side of the ice between the red line and blues zone. His view is not optimal with the number of players in that area. That leaves us with the linesmen. Both of which are great officials and missed it. Murray just completed making the onside call and MacPherson has just got into position outside the blues end zone. As a referee, still partially working the 3-man system, I hope to God my linesman can bail me out. But what do I know. I’m just another terrible ref not working in the show.
Review needs to happen on all Overtime goals. If you have the right people in place it would be quick and we wouldn’t have this outcome. The game is so fast now and humans are going to make mistakes, even with 4 officials on the ice. |

Look at every angle and you can see not one of the officials had a direct line of sight of his hand hitting the puck.
There a million views of this play on the Web showing players blocking the officials views.
How is this so difficult to understand?

The "Situation Room" crew in Toronto should be identified publicly at every game and should consist of people who are certified to have passed an NHL Rule Book test -- with a demonstrated understanding, for example, of what is and is not goaltender interference -- before being appointed as a league replay judge. - Paul Stewart
That's impossible. No one really knows what is and isn't goaltender interference. |
