Not sure what Stevie saw in this guy that none of the other GM's or top analysts saw. There was still a ton of top level talent there to be had. Not at all happy with this pick. Good grief, when you have Cozens or Zegras still available... why this guy ??
Guess I'll be seeing him play in Grand Rapids next season. Hope Seider isn't a bust and can be a top 4 defenseman. |

I guess you could be right. I still think they could have traded down, got a second and still picked Vinyl Sider. |

He really impressed me at the world championships . He seemed to always stand out with his poise. If I didn’t already know , I would have never have thought he was as young as he is |

I Feel everyone's frustration but we need defense dammit & every year Holland came up with a reason to not do that... if that moron Holland didnt waste a pick on Rasmussen... we would have Cal Foote... if the idiot didnt take Zadina... we would have Quinn Hughes... i dont care about the forwars i just hope this guy we got is not another D Cholowski...
What actually pisses me off is the draft lottery, its a bullpoop probably fixed process & its started to make me detest the NHL because this is now 2 out of 3 years much better teams than the Wings get higher picks & we get screwed out of the best defenceman... Colorado should not have Byram, thats bullpoop! they already have Makar... Dallas screwed us when they got Heiskanen... so basically because of the nhl lottery detroit will never get an actual fair pick!
But lets keep allowing buffalo, edmonton. colorodao & these clown teams to continue soaking up the talent screwing teams desperate for a (frank)ing real pick/player!!! The draft lottery is a joke & so is the cap!! |

I doubt the system is rigged. You realize Colorado originally had the first overall pick before the lottery, right? |

I'll be the first to admit that I don't follow prospects as closely as many of the others on this board. So I might be out of my depth here. But there are some things that definitely make me nervous about this pick.
- Not that pre-draft rankings are always perfect, but when you pick /way/ outside the collective wisdom -- especially this high in the draft, where every player has been scouted extensively by everyone -- it definitely raises red flags. Who is more likely to be right -- one GM, or everybody else combined? You could argue that Yzerman was drafting for need rather than BPA, but even then there seems to be several better options available at D.
- Things like "He really impressed in the World Championships" as a justification for an unexpected pick actually make me /more/ nervous about taking Seider that high. It worries me that maybe he shot up the draft board based on a very small sample of games, rather than his body of work so far as a whole. Not saying this is definitely the reason he was taken so high, but could be.
- Very, very few players get drafted out of the DEL. That doesn't necessarily mean a player is going to be bad, obviously. But it does mean that there is a lot more uncertainty when trying to project such players statistically (at least using publicly available tools and stats available to a statistically minded fan). In fact there are so few direct transfers between the DEL and NHL it's often omitted entirely from widely published NHLe translation tables. Best guess is that quality of play in the DEL is roughly on par with major juniors, but well behind the top Euro pro leagues (KHL, SHL, Liiga, NLA) that many top Euro prospects get drafted out of, and possibly even behind some of their second divisions. But it's hard to know because the sample is so small.
Again, not saying Seider is definitely doomed. Like all fans I'll just sit back, watch, and hope he pans out into something special. But it's hard for me to see where this pick is coming from, or even really evaluate what might be motivating it. From my own (admittedly limited) perspective it seems like there were several options still on the table that would have been safer bets with higher ceilings. |

Simplest way to put it for me. I like the prospect but not necessarily the right value at 6th overall.
If he becomes Seth Jones we will all be praising Yzerman.
If he becomes Cody Ceci we will all be saying told you so. |

Surprised, but this pick is not too far off base. If you look at the final NHL Mock Draft they had Sieder going 12th and Dach going 13th. I realize it's a small sample and not the same as say TSN, but going from 12th to 6th is easier to see than 13th to 3rd. I think the Wings liked him and they thought Edmonton was going to take him so they were gun shy about trading down if was going to be gone. He will be a solid defenseman who will chew minutes and provide a good first pass-at worst. If he rounds out his offensive game then this will be a homerun pick. |

The only thing that leads me to think the reason Yzerman not to care about other GMs or scout ranking lists,
is that he believed Holland also wanted a D man, and likely THIS kid,
you cant trade down to 7 from 6, and if you dont take him then Holland does,
so, you kinda just go for it and take the kid
im not thrilled with the pick, i would have preferred Cozens, maybe Zegras, but i mean, theres no way to know who won here just yet obviously |

Not sure if anybody can argue that Seider is better than Broberg at this point ??
Heard one analyst say he didn't see any offensive upside with Seider. And he was shocked by the pick as well. I DON'T want to see another Libor Sulak 2.0. Remeber that "project" ? He had good size and was an excellent skater when I saw him in GR. But he also didn't have any offensive upside and got caught out of position... which is why he couldn't crack Detroit's lineup. |
