Carol Schram: Peak Petey: Can Elias Pettersson improve on Calder Trophy season in Year 2? Looking at the career arcs of the NHL's past Calder Trophy-winning forwards and today's top centres, it looks like Elias Pettersson is well-positioned to improve on his stellar rookie season in his second year with the Vancouver Canucks.

I think Elias can improve on his rookie season. He has more beefy wingers to make more room for him though Benning has not brought in enough bonafide heavyweight enforcers to make the opponent reconsider running him.

Thanks Carol

I like the Fans vote better than the NHL vote.

Pettersson is a freak of nature. The guy seemed like he was not satisfied with last years personal success and looks like he wants to improve.

I think when his career is over we may be looking at one of the best 25 ever to play. It is very early but I get that feeling about him. He looks very special

He shot 20% last season and almost never had to play in the offensive zone. He is a good player, but ranking him the top 20 is a joke.

He will be lucky to repeat his performance. His shooting percentage will regress, which basically means he’ll need to DOUBLE his skill and ability next season in order to recreate the same results.

Do I like him and think he’s going to get better skill wise several years in a row? Absolutely! Is he a top 20 center right now, and will he be anytime soon. No way!

Thanks Carol. Wonder which additional line mate will bump up Petey's points?
1) Sven
2) Miller
3) Ferland
4) Goldy
5) All the above
6) Fill in another

I just got a copy of Quinn: The Life of a Hockey Legend.

Gonna start it tonight; too hot to sleep anyway. Let me know if you've read it and what you think. Looking forward to it.

Enforcers are dinosaurs.
Running a player requires catching him or if he slips up & open to getting nailed. The biggest problem is idiots taking cheap shots. Slashing Boarding Low hits etc.

Excellent blog Carol. I like EP's odds of improving his point totals in his sophomore season. The numbers on Miller suggest most lines improve with him on the wing... EP himself has a knack for rolling over personal bests and records... a young man with outstanding competitiveness and determination. My money is on him to keep breaking out this season.

I like where the Canucks are right now. Some call it the light at the end of the tunnel.

We will start to see guys like Tanev finishing his term with the Canucks this year and will probably be replaced with a cheaper Tryamkin. The following year we will be saying bye to Sven Sutter and most likely Pearson. I think by then one or two prospects should be ready.

Your most intelligent response is making fun of people with disabilities, and assuming I live in AZ, am racist, and voted for Trump? Actually, every single one of those assumptions is false, but I do know and love hockey, and my argument against yours is probably the biggest reason Pettersson will struggle!

Pettersson will struggle how exactly?
He now has more talent at his disposal.
Is he similar to all the past rookies or you assume as much?

Maybe they put Benn right side and OJ on the left after Tanev is gone.

I'd like to move on from the Tree *project*. Thats exactly what he is if he comes over and I think the Canucks are too deep to need to go through getting his speed and thought process up to North American standards all over again(which wasnt a smashing success). His upside is just not enough for me to see it as worth it.

I actually hope a GM bites at him as a sweetener in some deal... it would be dreamy if he was part of a LE package.

I don't mind if he comes here and plays the 5/6 . He is suppose to be in very good shape this year.

I am not expecting a lot from tree but I am not expecting a lot from Tanev either and Tree would be half the price for two years as Woo develops more

And everyone of your assumptions about Pettersson is also false.
