The bigger question is will Melnyk spring for the extra cost of sewing a "C" on a player's jersey? |

Why else would they have two players named Brown on the team? |

One will have to wear the home jersey and the other the away each game. |

Those three comments were pretty funny. |

My vote would be for bobby ryan.He always been very good teammate and showed high class in and out the ice. He's not going anywhere with his contract and can be good mentor for youngers guys.
After that i would say pageau who's been a warrior for Senators.I can see him resigning in ottawa since few players wont come back in 2020-2021 and they'll need to reach the cap floor anyway. |

There are no assistant captains, the "A" stands for Alternate Captain, always has. |

No body who grew up playing hockey in Canada called it alternate capt. |

it cannot be Chabot, he is getting traded in the next 10 months, and Brady in the next 22 months. |

Skip this year and give it to either Brady or Chabot the year after... we’re going to be awful this season, no need to destroy the youngsters already |

This strikes me as a year where you have maybe 3 or 4 alternate captains, but don't pick a 'C' until it's clear who it should be and they're ready for it. Personally, I'd go with something like Pageau, Chabot, Ryan, and Tkachuk.
Borowiecki would eat glass with a smile for the team, but I also don't like the idea of an alternate captain being a potential healthy scratch when younger kids like Brannstrom, Wolanin, and Jaros begin to establish themselves. |
|

|
Borowiecki has been the longest serving Sen and works his tail off every night. Plus he buys you 1 year to better decide which young guy will wear the C the following year. - bikeguy99
looking at the roster and who will likely be in the NHL, there is a very real chance that Boro will be a semi-regular healthy scratch......not a good idea to make him Captain.
locks on the blue line
Chabot, de-melo, zaitsev, hainsey....and Boro will be fighting for a spot with Jaros, Wolanin, and whichever young guy blows the coaches away in camp.
the guy is by no means a lock to be in the lineup....he can't be the captain. |

No need to name a captain now. Very little point really. Until this team develops a core again, leave the team without a captain. That could be several years. |

I feel we've had similar discussions about this already.
I vote for Pageau.
Covers the English and French press, is well spoken and plays like he's Chara's height.
I think Colin White is my pick for the future C. Quiet soft spoken - but when he speaks it's always well thought out intelligent stuff.
My one for sure you CAN'T DO..is make Tkachuk captain. It will completely handcuff the way he needs to play to generate offense. It's the same reason you don't see Marchand wearing a C. He has to be an a-hole to be effective. Same with Brady. You put a C on him and all of a sudden he has to behave and set a good example blah blah.

he's probably not trolling...
I wouldn't buy a jersey with a name on the back of it until we have a new owner

He may be trolling but there's some truth to the comment. Until Chabot's signed, this could very well happen. |

Really? Name me the last RFA that the team failed to re-sign. |

Strongly disagree with you. Why would Hainsey or Zaitsev ever be captain of this squad? They came from a rival, and put up terrible numbers. Looking at the roster, I feel Boro will be in the lineup. The LD isn't too deep, and a guy who has served as a Sen for 9 seasons and trains daily would be a great captain, plus it is only a 1 year commitment. I mean, it really doesn't matter. He will be a leader in the room and it is only a letter, but I certainly would not give it to any of your above recommendations. |

I NEVER said make either of those guys captain, I said they're locks to be in the every day lineup......boro is absolutely not a lock. the ONLY reason that guy gets a regular spot is because management likes his "loyalty" or whatever, not because he deserves it in terms of skill and ability.
you can't give the C to someone who wont' play every game, and boro will likely be a healthy scratch on a lot of nights |

I would consider Stone's last RFA contract a MASSIVE failure.....they signed him because he was an RFA and had to sign in Ottawa (or hold out), but they ABSOLUTELY failed in that they didn't get him to sign a multi year deal.
that is NOTHING but a failure. |

Regardless of your personal opinion of that RFA contract, it was still a signed RFA contract. The suggestion was that Chabot and Tkachuk would be gone right after their rookie contracts as soon as they became RFA, and my point is that this team has virtually never traded an RFA player because of their contract expectations. Despite already subverting the cap, they have $12M+ coming off the books next year from the contracts of Anderson, Boedker, and Hainsey, plus another $10M+ coming off LTIR contracts for MacArthur and Callahan. Signing their two best young RFA will only be an issue if they want to leave. |

Tend to agree that not locking up Stone long term in his RFA year was a misstep. However, Stone probably also knew that his most productive years were ahead of him and could get more money with a bridge type contract? Hard to make the call. As long as you get a guy signed one way or another, you’re ahead of the game in negotiations on the next contract. Dorion and co def blew that. Talent retention in Ottawa has been brutal since the cup run over 10 years ago. |

Tend to agree. Melnyk has never really had an issue signing RFA’s. It’s when the UFA demands happen that he turtles. You can argue the terms are not ideal, but generally, they get their first big NHL contract. Keeping them after the 2 years or whatever is the issue. |
