4.74m x 6???? That makes the Nylander deal look pretty good. |

I thought the $/year was a little high, but not too much. Hey, at least we're spending money this time. |

Wow, it really says something that they haven't handed out a deal this big since 2014. I mean it's less than $5M per season.....over 6 years. That means they haven't handed out a $30M contract since 2014? |

It's true... especially coming from one of the team's best young players, who some thought might be trying to get out as soon as possible. People can quibble about the dollar value if they want, but this is a very positive step forward for a team that has almost redefined what it means to take a step backwards.

Not sure why some people want to compare Sens contracts with Leaf negotiation problems. Sens are a team in primary growth phase. Leafs are trying to unpack a 20 year history of choking. Apples and oranges. |

the 21 year old rookie who put up the same numbers as Kapanen and Johnsson, without the benefit of top six minutes.......who Ottawa managed to get locked up long term to a team friendly contract, while the leafs have spent the last 2 seasons getting F-ed in the ass by handing out nothing but massively player friendly contracts..............enjoy spending 35 mil on 3 players, if one of them doesn't end up bolting for another league, and still not being able to beat the Bruins - sensarmy_11
20 years of choking and Leaf fans want to pretend this time will be different.

I thought White was one of the best players not in the NHL, Harpur was a top pairing Dman, and Phaneuf was a valuable member of your team?
What happened to all that summer talk Spatso. There was so very much of it.

So, do you actually believe the chronic Leaf choking syndrome can be directly correlated with excess cash flow? Perhaps. I think it has more to do with figure skaters. This is a team of dancers, no heart, no grit, no character. |

I'm not taking sides, and I hate the leafs as much as anyone.....but when you criticize the on-ice performance of a team, especially when they're SIGNIFICANTLY better than the team you cheer for, you look like a fool............and given your severe lack of "trolling ability", you just come off looking even more foolish.
you can mock their cap situation all you want, cuz it's a (frank)ing disaster, and will be for the foreseeable future.....but on the ice they're one of the best teams in the league (despite the fact they can't beat boston). just stop |

That is where the league is going these days. Do you not think the Sens will need to pony up 10-12m+ a year just to keep Tkchuk and Chabot in a year or two? They will need to. But will the owner pay? Unlikely. Enjoy losing your truly elite young players. The payroll landscape has changed
The narrative that the Leafs are bottlers and the Sens have Stanley Cup success if silly. Both have zero cups. That’s all that matters |

Chabot might end up being a 9 or 10 million dollar player, but I doubt Tkachuk gets there coming out of his ELC......unless he miraculously doubles his goal totals next year, he'll either get a bridge deal at like 5 or 6, or sign a longer term deal similar to Nylander |

I don't know if the cap situation is a disaster? It's tight, but I look at it this way... do they have even one contract they couldn't easily move?
The only one I see would be Ceci?, and honestly, I have no idea what they were doing with that signing. They should have let him go to arbitration and walked away, comfortably signed Marner, and picked up a cheap Dman to replace Ceci or start a rookie. They must honestly think Ceci can play. Ugh.
A goalie who chokes in big games and a lack of any sort of team toughness is a bigger concern for me than the cap.

I'm more thinking now and into next year.........right now it's sort of manageable, but if you can't get Marner signed to a team friendly deal you may be in trouble next offseason when you literally need to re-sign your entire D corps with less than 20 mil in cap space. I think next year will be more challenging than this year was
I agree with Ceci.....the only logic I can see is that they didn't want to hurt the development of Sandin and Liljegren.......or they genuinely think that Ceci is a decent player (which would terrify me as a leafs fan) |

You are right about Sandin and Liljegren. I won't get too deep into it on a Sens thread, but Rielly is still signed, I think they sign one of Barrie or Muzzin and bring up one of the kids, and they fill in with UFAs.
It is definitely a concern, but which team doesn't have concerns in a cap world. |

To be fair though, the sens did beat the leafs 3/4 times last season and two of those games were after the sens lost Stone, Dzingel and Duchene. I know, I know your talking overall but just something funny to note. |

A bottler is a term for someone or a team who always lets you down. I’ll use simpler terms next time
The current NHL salary structure is unsustainable. Every team has or will soon have players who they seemingly cannot sign. The Leafs resurgence coincided with this change.
I think the lack of signings of top end RFAs is an indicator of this dilemma. Success should not be punished.
I believe this will all lead up to another work stoppage in a year or two |
