No more defensemen, the Sabres need more high output scorers and a good center. One's that are proven scorers in the minor leagues, none of this he is a great skater, great finese, etc. but not a big scorer. The team needs someone who can score goals besides Eichel. |

possibly because they keep falling in prospect ratings |

I don’t understand why Sabres didn’t draft Arthur Kaliyev when he fell. Seemed like a no brainer. Think he’s doing well and a desperate position of need with high upside.
Botterill has got to go before he causes even more damage. He’s damaged around league after the ROR trade with other GMs knowing he will buckle.
I can’t believe how much miss Regier/Ruff combo. |

Ryan Johnson sounds like Pysyk part deux |
|
|
|
Yep, Ryan Johnson was a very uninspired choice given our organizational needs and the couple of players who dropped to that pick. The highest Johnson was rated, pre-draft was a late 2nd |

Michael Ghofrani: Top 10 Sabres Prospects Part 1 #10-6 - Michael Ghofrani
Good blog, Michael. One recommendation for Part 2 would be to include each player's current age with the Potential Role and Likelihood of Reaching It section.
I know they all are under 23, but an 18-year-old would be different from a 22-year-old pushing 23. |

They should’ve taken a forward with the Johnson pick, but I think it’s premature to say his ceiling is 5/6 D man |

Im willing to take the L if his role is higher than that. I just don't see it so far. He is very young though |

College D men are tough to gauge.
I like the skill set. He could develop a better offensive touch |

Also, I’m extremely confused as to why this blog doesn’t mention Obama and the H1N1 crisis. |

For someone thinking of investing in stocks for the first time, what would you recommend? I just opened an account through my bank to buy some stocks.
Or should I use online service instead? |

Turbo, you can dislike the pick all you want but that’s just not true. There were many draft experts that had him as a late first/early second guy. To say he was at highest a late second is just flat out wrong. |

Webull is supposed to be pretty good, no commissions and no minimums. But others here know more about that than me. It also depends on what you're looking for. Do you want your hand held? Then just get a fiduciary. It'll cost you more on the trades you make, but they'll also probably make better decisions than you which will end up making more money in the long run. |

I'm assuming you're on a long investment horizon since you're buying stocks for the first time, and you're beginning with a modest (sub 50k) investment. I don't know, however, if you actively watch the market and read quarterly earnings reports. TBH, watching CNBC for all of your news is a great way to learn about stocks and get rid of 90% of political talk. All they really talk about is the market 90% of the time. It's quite edifying once you know what to listen for. They interview CEOs on a daily basis. It's by far and away the best cable news in America IMO and has been for years. I never read earnings reports before I watched CNBC. Now, I read them for any company I own. Most people care to stay uniformed in the market, however, and invest passively (if at all), but you said you want to buy stocks (that means stocks and not index funds to me) so you should take the time to become informed because ALL STOCKS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE BASED UPON COMPANY MANAGEMENT. Or, as we see with the hospitality and transport industries right now, Black Swan events. Externalities that are unforeseen and catastrophic. Just as the Financial Crisis took down Lehman Bros and Bear Stearns, expect a cruise line and/or an airline to fall now before the economic impact of Covid 19 is done.
With those assumptions in mind, my advice is to pick one or both of the following companies and dump all of you money into them. You then take the dividends from these companies and reinvest them right back into those companies as they accrue. If you're going to become and active trader of stocks, then my advice is to educate yourself and from there you will be able to pick your own. To start with though pick one of these two or both of them:
Apple and Microsoft
I prefer Microsoft, but Apple has about $100 billion more cash on hand than Microsoft. Both of these companies have the best leadership in the corporate world, and - in the case of MSFT - the entire world. CEO Nadella and CFO Hood are IMO the best leadership duo on planet earth. That's not an overstatement. They generate over 1 million dollars of revenue per employee per year, and they employ 110,000 people. You think the average American generates a mil of revenue per year? Not even close.
Both of these companies have enough cash on hand to buy Ford multiple times over. Either one could buy Tesla tomorrow. As of right now, Apple could buy Exxon Mobil and have almost $100 billion in cash left over. What that tells me, is both of these companies are going to go shopping for other companies in their industries to ensure they remain the dominant behemoths they are as the world moves to 5G, the cloud, AI, robotics, block chain security, quantum computing, and all that other fun stuff science fiction tells us we'll have in the future.
They both pay dividends. They both buy back their own stock. They both print money like they're the Treasury.
10 years from now MSFT will trade at or above $1,000 as will AAPL, I have very little doubt of that. And, they will both pay you dividends too for the honor of owning their stock along the way.

Interesting stuff. I thought adding the ages and likelihood’s was a nice touch, too, but wonder where you get the likelihood from. |

Why should it be mentioned now? The media barely mentioned it while it was happening... |

Passive investing has historically performed better than active investing for most retail investors.
As simple as it sounds, just buy an S&P 500 index ETF if you want to just set it and forget it.
It will trail the index returns slightly but when the market goes up, so will your portfolio.
There are definitely ways to out perform the market in the short term. You can do company research and look at their characteristics (fundamental analysis) or you can look at the price charts and moving averages to see when a stock may be trading above and below value (technical analysis) its all personal preference.
