Ben...welcome to San Jose...I don't know how many games that you have watched but part of the problem is the positioning of the D men. The worst of the bunch is Burns who is frequently losing his man/assignment and leaving him open for a wide open shot or easy tap in/rebound. EK65 has his deficiencies but at least he hustles back and tries. You have two wingers EK9 and #62 who are lazy on D as well.

That said, I've heard goalie experts on NHL Radio describe Jones as barely technically efficient as an NHL Goalie in todays game. . He played better after his layoff and working with Nabby but .....Dell has played better with more confidence but probably isn't a #1 for the long term.

There is a flaw in your thinking though...if Dell at $2mm is too expensive, how is Greiss or Khudobin better at $3mm cap hit...especially given the current situation where the cap is not going up. They are up against the cap to begin with and have to qualify their RFA's (LeBanc and Kellman) at 110%. Jumbo will take a cut and you can bring Marleau back for their last years since we don't really have people ready in the AHL to take their place so every dollar has to count.

Thank you!

I'll be honest and say I probably watched seven or eight Sharks games this year, basically whenever they played Carolina, New York, Ottawa or Toronto. I'm not trying to put everything on goaltending and I'm aware the support in front of Jones is an issue. That said, an .896 SV% two years in a row isn't sustainable for a competitive team. I don't think Jones is incapable, but I do think it's hard to make the argument he's justified his spot as a starter.

As for Dell/free agency, I didn't say his contract is too expensive but if it came off that way, I apologize. My thinking there is that Khudobin and Greiss are both very solid backup goalies who could play a high number of games and support Jones to a greater extent for just a slight increase in pay.

As for the RFAs, based on comparables and limited NHL games, Kellman isn't getting a giant raise and I truly don't believe he'd be a cap concern. Labanc will but it won't be as substantial as it may have been a year ago. Adding about $1M to the payroll for a goalie is a possible thing to do, even in a cap crunch and there's also another $5M coming off the books in M. Karlsson, plus Dillon and Martin's retained salary + buyout (and potentially more if Thorton's salary is reduced).

Welcome to San Jose, Sir, and thank God we FINALLY got someone to cover the Sharks!

Would it be worth buying out Jones? Do you know if he has a no movement clause? Can we bury him in the minors and sign Holtby?

Thank you, happy to be covering the team!

He has a pretty solid no trade clause, which would only allow him to be traded to three other teams of his specification, but not a NMC. I wouldn't buy him out, as it would mean upwards of $1.6M against the cap for eight years, with some years being quite a bit higher than that number. However, if compliance buyouts become a possibility this year, I think it should be considered.

If a Compliance Buyout with no repercussions comes about then I would strongly consider buying out Jones if I can sign Lehner in his place.

Given the state of the economy and Cap Situation; I'm betting that there aren't a lot of big raises coming to anyone not named Taylor Hall. I'd keep Melker as he is just as good as anyone who is out there as a pending UFA and he can play up and down the lineup if needed. He may even sign for less than the $2mm he is getting now and then wait a year to see where the Cap is. I'd re-sign Heed as he is under-utilzed and under appreciated and he's better than anyone behind him in the depth chart. You now also have to replace Goodrow who was playing Top 6 minutes with someone who hasn't shown they can do it on a consistent basis.

A Bold move, assuming that Jumbo and Patty sign at $700k each, would be to take advantage of Toronto's Cap Hell and trade Burns for one of their very highly priced forwards so that we get a younger Top 6 forward , which was Doug's intention two years ago when he tried to sign Tavares.

Lehner is greatly underappreciated and has the potential to be one of the league's top starters. It still shocks me that his value isn't higher. Only problem is he'll be the top goalie on the market and likely highly sought-after.

Moving Burns for a younger forward is an idea but I'd say I think it's really unlikely Toronto goes for that if it means moving one of their star forwards. Maybe a few years ago but at this point Burns is 35 and comes with a big contract with lots of term left.

Not sure that goaltending is the major problem. The defense was abysmal this year. If they shape it up. Martin Jones can bounce back

I am quite sure Markstrom will be available, due to Canucks cap issues.
He would probably be the best bang for the buck and can play behind awful defense.

But Lehner and Holtby will be available. Holtby is one goalie I would avoid at all costs, he looks to be another Bobrovsky. Pretty much lost his job to Samsonov.

Lehner can play starter and will be far cheaper than Holtby for sure. His numbers ever since moving from Buffalo have been nothing short of amazing.

For me I would invest in either Markstrom or Lehner. Both would be looking for job security and term.
