Let me start by just saying I don't want this to come accross the wrong way. What happened to Cave is very, very sad. On the other hand, he probably made more money than most 25-year olds. The NHL also has a mandatory insurance plan. He had no children. If people want to donate that's great. But personally I've donated to a local nurse who was a single mom to 4 kids but died trying to help treat others from Covid-19. Her life insurance won't be enough to provide for 4 kids. Again, I'm deeply saddened by what happened to Cave but there are also others suffering all around us who may be in even greater need. Peace and love all.

First of all, RIP Colby, my condolences. I think this is a great gesture, and don't want to be the douche either, but do professional athletes' families really need this kind of support? Given he's played 67 games in the NHL, he's most likely made ~$1m (3yr ELC in AHL is 190k, 90k signing bonus, almost a full season in NHL is like another 600k) + like the above guy stated, insurance coverage. Nonetheless, sucks to see someone at such a young age pass away.

Agreed with the 2nd and 3rd comments wholeheartedly.

While its a disappointment losing a player from our favorite team, its a bigger shame we as fans step out of our way to support them and their families after. As a fringe player, undrafted Colby likely made more by the time he was 25, than a good handful of us did combined. Add in his 3 years on a 2 way contract to a professional sports league since his tryout contract and he and his wife should be ok. Meanwhile, entry level teachers who were making about 55k/yr are being laid off and wont be able to support themselves through this whole thing. A RPN makes approximately 60k per year and cant support a family RN. Entry level paramedic about 65k/yr.

If you want to support the family send some good sentiments and love their way. They definitely need it. But in order to help the world change and make sure some of us and our loved ones keep on keeping on, send that money towards those that need it to keep going to work to keep us all alive.

Good sentiment Sean, but at this time it is a bit lost.

A bit of an update. The Oilers organization and the Cave family have setup the Colby Cave Memorial Fund with all proceeds going towards community programs with an emphasis on mental health initiatives and providing access to sports for underprivileged children.

I am planning on taking the funds that have been raised already and donating them to a cause that the Cave family wants.

Great news. Glad the family did that.
