In answer to your question, Ben, while Mayfield's deal brings the 2nd most value per dollar, Pelech's is even better. Pelech is arguably the best defensive defenseman on the team and he only costs a few bucks more than Mayfield.

Is that cheating, though? Pelech's deal is technically a bridge because he's an RFA when it expires. I guess it is only one year less than Mayfield's though.

I agree with you, but I'm interested to see what people are thinking. I think my ranking would go: Pelech, Mayfield, Nelson.

I have always like Mayfield from the day they drafted him. I believe he has good value. his cost and steady play.

I remember a lot of people were not happy with Mayfield contract when he signed it.

I remember saying I heard the kid's work ethic is insane and at that price and his size it's really not that bad a deal. I have not heard people talk about a kid's work ethic more since we had Chara who could barely skate when we drafted him... I like Mayfield a lot. He gets better and more consistent each year. He is also a great dude with family/brother in U.S. military which is probably where his work ethic comes from...

Not saying he is going to end up being Chara by the way.. just pointing out that everyone around Isles talk about this kids attitude and work ethic in very good way.

I guess I get why people may have been skeptical about the deal at the time, based on giving out that much term with Mayfield's lack of NHL experience. Those deals are often a gamble but the Isles certainly came out on the right end of it.

Have seen very few players signed that long for that cheap. Benefits of believing in the player and capitalizing early.
